Pro hoofer Maks quitting 'Dancing With the Stars'

By Rebecca Macatee, E! Online

Theo Wargo / Getty Images

Maksim Chmerkovskiy danced his way into our hearts, but he's ready to move on. He will not return to "Dancing With the Stars" after his contract expires, his rep confirms to E! News. He has three cycles of the show (two after the all-stars season) left to compete.

"What else do I have to do there after 15 seasons?" he told the New York Post.. "It makes total sense. The audience can't expect for me to want to stick around, and the producers can't expect for me to want to stick around."

'I'm not taking any of his nonsense,' pro Kym says of Joey Fatone

"I loved doing it. But to be honest with you, at 32, I am at what-about-me time," he said.

Meaning? Acting, of course!

"I caught the bug, as they say," he said. "This is something I really want to do."

But fret not. We don't have to say goodbye to Maks on the dance floor quite yet. He and season 12 partner Kirstie Alley will be competing in the DWTS all-star season beginning on Monday.

All of "DWTS" all-star pairings

"We may have had a couple of weeks last time that we cruised on popularity or fan appeal or whatever," he said. "But I am not really sure that is going to work for us this time. I am not sure people are going to vote for us just because it is us."

We'll make sure to cast our votes.

"Dancing" fans, what do you think about the departure of ballroom's bad boy? Will you miss him? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page.

Romney controversy points to power of viral video

(AP) ? After this, politicians everywhere should surely get the message. Mitt Romney's secretly recorded remarks at a Florida fundraiser ? and the uproar that has followed ? reinforce a key reality of the digital media era: the power of viral video to disrupt and potentially alter a high-stakes political contest.

The amateur video of Romney casting 47 percent of Americans as believing they are "victims" who feel entitled to government assistance has burned up the Internet and aired continually on cable television since its release Monday by Mother Jones magazine. It's thrown his campaign off track in a tight race with President Barack Obama and with less than seven weeks until Election Day.

Mother Jones has not disclosed who recorded the remarks. A spokeswoman said that by Wednesday afternoon, the full video and a series of clips had received 5 million page views on the magazine's website and 3 million more views on YouTube.

In a presidential race noteworthy for the intensity of its televised advertising ? Obama, Romney and their allies are on track to spend about $1.1 billion on campaign commercials this year ? the impact of the leaked video has been particularly stark.

While both sides have deployed scores of highly produced ads aimed at swaying a small group of undecided voters in a handful of battleground states, the decidedly low-tech Romney video has done far more than any one commercial to sway the national political conversation.

There's no doubt campaigns will continue to rely on TV ads as an important component of their communications strategy. But they also can't ignore the proliferation of camera-equipped smartphones and amateur videographers eager to capture candidates in unvarnished and potentially revealing situations.

"It's the democratization of information. One video can offset millions of dollars in campaign ads," said Darrell West, director of the Center for Technology Innovation at the Brookings Institution in Washington. "The Internet is now the great equalizer ? videos can go viral and be seen by millions of people for free."

Amateur videos have played a significant role in international incidents. In Iran, bystanders captured the shooting death of a woman named Neda Agha Soltan during protests against that country's disputed presidential election in 2009. The video circulated widely online and in social media, becoming one of the enduring symbols of the clash between government forces and pro-democracy activists.

While not shot by amateurs, the trailer for the anti-Islam movie "Innocence of Muslims" also showed the powerful combination of moving images and the far-reaching Internet. The film has been linked to an outburst of violent protests in the Middle East and controversy in other parts of the world.

In the U.S. in 2006, Sen. George Allen, R-Va., was captured on video referring to a mixed-race Democratic campaign videographer as "macaca." The term is considered a racial slur in some countries, but Allen at the time said he meant no racial intent. Footage of the encounter went viral online, forcing Allen on the defensive in the closing weeks of the campaign. He narrowly lost re-election to Democrat Jim Webb and is now running for the seat again.

Obama, too, has been scorched by amateur recordings. In 2008, at a San Francisco fundraiser, Obama was caught on tape suggesting "bitter" small-town voters "cling to their guns or religion or antipathy toward people who are not like them." The remarks were recorded by an Obama campaign donor who doubled as a citizen journalist for The Huffington Post. The episode helped reinforce skepticism about Obama among many white working-class voters that polls show persists to this day.

Republicans have tried to turn the tables on Obama since the Romney fundraising video surfaced, pointing to an audio recording from 1998 in which Obama, then an Illinois state senator, seems to endorse income redistribution "at least to a certain level to make sure everybody's got a shot." The Republican National Committee released a Web video using Obama's comments, and Romney mentioned them at a fundraiser Wednesday, saying Obama "really believes in what I'll call a government-centered society."

It was unclear whether that pushback could mitigate any damage done to Romney's campaign by the "47 percent" video, which reinforced through the candidate's own words the Obama campaign ads depicting Romney as a rich businessman unconcerned with the middle class.

"He's reinforcing the stereotype as someone who doesn't get the plight of ordinary Americans and appears indifferent to them," the Brookings Institution's West said. "If you didn't have the early framing of Romney, the video wouldn't be so devastating. It's the one-two punch of the Obama ads and this video that are deadly."

Several Republican lawmakers have already distanced themselves from Romney's remarks, and the candidate himself described them as "inelegant" at a hastily convened news conference just hours after the video surfaced. Romney's running mate, Paul Ryan, said Wednesday that Romney had been "obviously inarticulate."

The emergence of viral video has led some political observers to speculate that campaigns will become even more carefully packaged than ever before and that nervous politicians fearing the presence of a secret camera phone will cease saying anything spontaneous, no matter what the audience.

But Rodell Mollineau, president of the pro-Obama group American Bridge, said candidates who did not try to say different things to different audiences had nothing to fear from secret taping. American Bridge assigns video "trackers" to Republican candidates, hoping to catch them in a potentially damaging unscripted moment.

"You can get a gotcha moment. Those happen. But more than anything you find inconsistencies in people's rhetoric," Mollineau said. "Politicians will still try to say one thing to one group of people and one thing to another group of people. It won't work anymore."

Promise of cell therapy for bowel disease

ScienceDaily (Sep. 19, 2012) ? New research shows that a special population of stem cells found in cord blood has the innate ability to migrate to the intestine and contribute to the cell population there, suggesting the cells' potential to treat inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

"These cells are involved in the formation of blood vessels and may prove to be a tool for improving the vessel abnormalities found in IBD," said lead author Graca Almeida-Porada, M.D., Ph.D., a professor at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center's Institute for Regenerative Medicine. The research is published in the current print issue of the journal Hepatology.

Up to 1 million Americans have IBD, which is characterized by frequent diarrhea and abdominal pain. IBD actually refers to two conditions -- ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease -- in which the intestines become red and swollen and develop ulcers. With IBD, blood vessels in the intestine leak and contribute to inflammation.

While there is currently no cure for IBD, there are drug therapies aimed at reducing inflammation and preventing the immune response. However, these therapies aren't always effective. The long-term aim of the research is to develop an injectable cell therapy to induce tissue recovery.

The work, performed while Almeida-Porada was at the University of Nevada, also involved colleagues from Indiana University School of Medicine. The researchers studied a special population of cells, known as endothelial colony-forming cells, found in cord blood, bone marrow and circulating blood. The finding in 1997 that the cells can contribute to blood vessel formation in adults, not just embryos, initiated the notion of using them for therapy. Studies in humans have validated the ability of these cells to improve reduced blood flow to the limbs and to treat heart diseases.

However, there have been few studies to explore the inherent biologic ability of these cells to home to different organs and contribute to tissue-specific cell populations. Evaluating their potential to migrate to the intestine was an obvious choice, said Almeida-Porada, because dysfunctional blood vessels are a hallmark of IBD. Not only are circulating levels of vessel-forming cells reduced in patients with IBD, but a key factor in IBD progression is the development of abnormal or immature blood vessels, which leads to chronic inflammation.

The cells were injected into fetal sheep at 59 to 65 days gestation. About 11 weeks later, intestinal tissue was analyzed to detect the presence of the human cells. The researchers found that the human cells had migrated to the intestine and contributed significantly to the cell population there.

"This study shows that the cells can migrate to and survive in a healthy intestine and have the potential to support vascular health," said Almeida-Porada. "Our next step will be to determine whether the cells can survive in the 'war' environment of an inflamed intestine."

The researchers also evaluated the ability of the cells to home to the liver. Smaller numbers of cells reached the liver than the intestine, suggesting that new strategies would be needed to enhance the therapeutic potential for this organ.

The research was supported by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute grants HL097623 and HL073737.

Arizona Medical Cannabis Event to Focus on Dispensary Insurance ...

September 19, 2012 event

Entrepreneurs looking to get involved in Arizona?s fledgling marijuana industry have no shortage of opportunities to receive help as they navigate the complex world of medical cannabis. Numerous groups have held seminars, conferences and other events aimed at providing much-needed information to locals hoping to open a dispensary, grow operation or other MMJ-related business.

The latest opportunity comes on Sept. 27, when?Cannassure Insurance Services will host a seminar in Scottsdale covering insurance options, risk management strategies and service innovations in the medical marijuana business. Patrick McManamon and Kathy Kukor from Cannassure will lead the insurance and risk management segment of the seminar, while Steve DeAngelo of Harborside Health Center ? a large dispensary based in Oakland, California ? will speak on service innovations.

?We will discuss strategies to minimize risk associated with crime and security, cash management, workers? comp, product liability and auto (delivery; hired and non-owned),? McManamon said. ?We have toured and observed numerous dispensaries, growing warehouses and infused product manufactures in California and Colorado over the last two years.? Our interviews with key employees and observations have formed the basis for our insurance and risk management program.?

Arizona recently selected dispensary finalists in a highly publicized lottery. The winners can now move to the next step in the process and ? if they qualify ? eventually receive a permit. But some high-level state officials are trying to shut down the entire program and a lawsuit on the issue will likely determine which side comes out on top. A judge could rule on the suit in the coming weeks.

The event ? which is free to locals who received initial approval by the state to open a dispensary ? will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Hotel Valley Ho, 6850 E. Main Street, in Scottsdale. The Marijuana Policy Project and the National Cannabis Industry Association are sponsoring the seminar. If you?re interested in attending, RSVP to Julie Yurchenko at 800-420-5757 or julie@cannassure.com.

Following the event, DeAngelo will host a separate talk titled ?A Journey Through Cannabis Reform? in a presentation sponsored by the 280E Reform Team. Tickets are $100. For more information or to register, visit the 280E Reform website.

DeAngelo will also speak at the upcoming National Marijuana Business Conference in Denver this November, while Cannasure is sponsoring and exhibiting at the two-day event. The Marijuana Policy Project and NCIA are also sponsoring the conference and will speak at the gathering as well. Hosted by Medical Marijuana Business Daily, the conference features 40 speakers and panelists representing a wide swath of the industry. Discount tickets are on sale here.

Samsung's latest commercial: The next big thing is already here

SGS3

How convenient. On the same day that Apple released the sixth iteration of its iOS, Samsung has released their latest Galaxy S III commercial. Must be some kind of coincidence.

In this latest commercial, you can see many consumers waiting in line in front of an unnamed store, apparently waiting for an unnamed phone. They all seem to be wearing white headphones though, I wonder if that's some sort of clue?

Perhaps my favorite line from the commercial was this one:

Girl: I heard the connector is all digital... What does that even mean?

Man: What? Who knows??..... long pause.... I'm psyched!

Anyway, the commercial does tout some of the SGS3's features such as a large screen, NFC and the fact that it's had 4G for a while now. It's pretty funny and unlike their print ad that ran a few days ago, this video was fairly clever. Head past the break to watch.

Mathematicians show how shallow water may help explain tsunami power

ScienceDaily (Sep. 18, 2012) ? While wave watching is a favorite pastime of beachgoers, few notice what is happening in the shallowest water. A closer look by two University of Colorado Boulder applied mathematicians has led to the discovery of interacting X- and Y-shaped ocean waves that may help explain why some tsunamis are able to wreak so much havoc.

Professor Mark Ablowitz and doctoral student Douglas Baldwin repeatedly observed such wave interactions in ankle-deep water at both Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico, and Venice Beach, Calif., in the Pacific Ocean -- interactions that were thought to be very rare but which actually happen every day near low tide. There they saw single, straight waves interacting with each other to form X- and Y-shaped waves as well as more complex wave structures, all predicted by mathematical equations, said Ablowitz.

When most ocean waves collide, the "interaction height" is the sum of the incoming wave heights, said Baldwin. "But the wave heights that we saw from such interactions were much taller, indicating that they are what we call nonlinear," he said.

Satellite observations of the 2011 tsunami generated by the devastating earthquake that struck Japan indicate there was an X-shaped wave created by the merger of two large waves. "This significantly increased the destructive power of the event," said Ablowitz. "If the interaction had happened at a much greater distance from shore, the devastation could have been even worse as the amplitude could have been even larger. Not every tsunami is strengthened by interacting waves, but when they do intersect there can be a powerful multiplier because of the nonlinearity."

Ablowitz first observed the nonlinear wave action in 2009 while visiting Nuevo Vallarta just north of Puerto Vallarta with his family. He took hundreds of photographs and videos of the peculiar waves over the next several years.

"Unlike most new physics, you can see these interactions without expensive equipment or years of training," said Ablowitz. "A person just needs to go to a flat beach, preferably near a jetty, within a few hours of low tide and know what to look for."

A paper on the subject by Ablowitz and Baldwin was published this month in the journal Physical Review E.

Baldwin, who is studying under Ablowitz, wanted to go the extra mile to verify that the wave interactions observed by his professor were not unique to one beach. In this case he drove more than 1,000 miles to the Los Angeles area "on a whim" to search for the types of waves Ablowitz had observed in Mexico. He hit the jackpot at Venice Beach.

"I don't think there is anything more enjoyable in science than discovering something by chance, predicting something you haven't seen, and then actually seeing what you predicted," said Baldwin.

PIMCO, DoubleLine, TCW big winners from Fed's QE3 assault

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Federal Reserve's move to stimulate the economy by buying mortgage securities is proving to be manna from heaven for three of the biggest players in the bond fund business: Pacific Investment Management Company, DoubleLine Capital and TCW.

The three investment firms all manage mutual funds that loaded up on mortgage-backed securities well before the Fed announced last Thursday that it would start buying $40 billion in government-backed mortgage debt each month until there's a sharp improvement in the job market.

With U.S. Treasury yields at extraordinary low levels, bond investors like TCW, PIMCO and DoubleLine have migrated toward mortgage-backed securities as those securities not only provide higher yields but they perform well when interest rates are stable.

It is TCW's flagship fund that is outperforming the ones managed by PIMCO co-founder Bill Gross and DoubleLine founder Jeffrey Gundlach - the two money managers seen as the reigning kings of the bond investing world.

The $7.4 billion TCW Total Return Bond Fund, which has more than 80 percent of its assets invested in mortgage-backed securities, is up 10.68 percent for the year.

The TCW fund is besting the 8.61 percent year-to-date return for the $272.5 billion PIMCO Total Return Fund - the world's biggest bond fund - and the 7.89 percent return posted by the $32 billion DoubleLine Total Return Bond Fund.

In the week since the Fed's announcement of new round of bond buying, known as quantitative easing, Lipper reports that the TCW fund has gained 0.59 percent, while PIMCO has gained 0.565 percent and DoubleLine 0.53 percent.

Bond industry experts say the funds that may generate the best returns are ones with heavy exposure to so-called "private label" mortgage-backed securities, as opposed to mortgage debt backed by government-sponsored mortgage agencies Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

These private label mortgage securities have no government guarantee of principal repayment, which distinguishes them from mortgage securities supported by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. The mortgages that back private label securities do not have the support of the government and as a result carry default risk, also called credit risk, a hazard absent in securities backed by the U.S. government.

Examples of private MBS securities include those issued by Wells Fargo, Goldman Sachs and New Century. Some private label securities are backed by prime loans while others are backed by subprime or alt-A loans.

The Fed's move might already have the unintended consequence of driving investors into private mortgage bonds because the central bank's action to buy government agency-backed mortgage debt is seen as driving down yields on bonds issued by Fannie and Freddie more than it will affect yields on mortgages securities that aren't backed by the agencies.

And with the housing market showing signs of recovery, managers say there's less risk for an investor in being more heavily weighted in mortgage-backed debt that isn't issued by Fannie or Freddie.

Government-backed mortgage debt has returned about 2.48 percent through July and currently yields between 1.5 percent to 2.25 percent, according to data provided by Angel Oak Capital, a $900 million investment firm that specializes in bond investing. Meanwhile, non-government-backed mortgage debt has returned 15.45 percent and currently yields between 5.0 percent and 6.5 percent.

Bryan Whalen, a co-manager of the TCW Total Return fund, said the lower rates on agency mortgage securities will eventually "push investor dollars" into the riskier non-agency mortgage securities.

"Over the long-term we still believe in the value of non-agency RMBS (residential mortgage-backed securities) and expect it to be a strong driver of performance," said Whalen, who co-manages the fund with managing director Mitch Flack and Tad Rivelle, the firm's fixed income chief investment officer.

The TCW fund has about 34 percent of its assets in non-government-backed mortgage debt and 47 percent of its assets in government-backed mortgage securities.

"Without a doubt, agency MBS yielding less than 1.5 percent should be avoided and instead, investors should focus on private label distressed MBS," said Tom Sowanick, co-president and chief investment officer at OmniVest Group LLC in Princeton, New Jersey.

FED'S SUGAR BOOST

The Fed is hoping that by purchasing agency-backed mortgage securities, it will push home mortgage rates down even further and provide an extra jolt to the housing market and the U.S. economy. Money managers say the impact of the Fed action on the economy is uncertain but some funds were buying up mortgage debt in advance of the announcement, which had been speculated on for months.

"Just with regards to last Thursday and Friday, it was probably more of an agency MBS story," Whalen said. But he said over the course of the year, "the large majority" of the fund's returns has come from its portfolio of non-government-backed mortgage securities.

The top performing fund since the Fed announcement is the Morgan Stanley Mortgage Securities Trust fund, which has risen 0.62 percent and has about 72 percent exposure to government-backed mortgage securities.

Sheila Huang, the manager of the Morgan Stanley fund, which has about 23.5 percent of its holdings in non-government-backed mortgages, said privately issued debt "may end up being the better performing sector going forward."

Brad Friedlander, the head portfolio manager of the Angel Oak Multi-Strategy Income Fund, said the yields on non-government-backed bonds boast are "still glaringly high." The $275 million fund is up 19.74 percent this year and has nearly 80 percent of its holdings in privately issued mortgage debt.

Friedlander said the Fed's stimulus "is just broadly beneficial to the housing market, and anything that's beneficial to housing typically will be beneficial to non-agencies."

France giving aid to rebel-held Syrian cities

PARIS (AP) ? France has started providing direct aid and money to five rebel-held Syrian cities as it intensifies efforts to weaken President Bashar Assad, in the first such move by a western power, a diplomatic source said Wednesday.

The French aid comes as U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon criticized the Security Council on Wednesday for failing to take action to protect Syrians facing violence that has led to thousands of deaths.

Amid mounting calls for the international community to do more to prevent bloodshed, France ? Syria's onetime colonial ruler ? has pushed to secure "liberated zones" in Syria.

France has increased its contacts with armed opposition groups, and started giving aid last Friday to local citizens' councils in five cities outside the government's control, the diplomatic source said. French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius promised last week that such aid was in the pipeline.

The aid is notably helping restore water supplies, bakeries and schools affected by Syria's civil war, with the aim of helping rebel-held areas run themselves, the diplomatic official said. He spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the French actions amid Syria's violence.

France's allies are interested in providing similar aid, the official said. He would not name the cities or explain how the aid is being provided, citing security reasons. He said the cities house a total of 700,000 residents and have been outside control of President Bashar Assad's regime for between one and five months.

French officials have acknowledged providing communications and other non-lethal equipment to Syrian rebel forces, but say they won't provide weapons without international agreement. France played a leading role in the international campaign against Libya's dictator Moammar Gadhafi last year.

At the U.N. General Assembly, Ban demanded urgent action to protect Syrians now fleeing the country in record numbers. "We have seen the immense human cost of failing to protect," he said.

In January, the death toll from the Syrian conflict ? which began in March 2011 as a peaceful protest against President Bashar Assad's regime ? was approaching 6,000. Activists now put the death toll at between 23,000 and 26,000.

At a U.N. summit in 2005, world leaders agreed that governments have a collective responsibility to protect people from genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes and ethnic cleansing. The concept arose from the World War II Holocaust, the killing fields of Cambodia in the late 1970s and the genocides in Rwanda in 1994 and Srebrenica in 1995.

The Security Council's paralysis on Syria has its roots partly in how the responsibility to protect has been used.

Last year, the Security Council authorized measures to protect civilians from attacks by Gadhafi's forces in Libya. Russia and China then complained that NATO went beyond the council's mandate.

Since the Syrian conflict erupted, Russia and China have strongly allied themselves with the Syrian government and have vetoed three Western-backed Security Council resolutions demanding that his forces end the violence and threatening sanctions if they didn't.

Ban told the General Assembly that "inaction cannot be an option for our community of nations."

Germany's U.N. Ambassador Peter Wittig, the current Security Council president, told a news conference Wednesday that the Security Council has not been united on crucial questions to deal with the Syrian crisis.

"But that doesn't mean that we simply cease to discuss this crisis," he said.

Home and Family: Make Moving House As Easy As Possible

It is said that moving house is one of the most stressful things you can do. It's no wonder. Even if there is excitement at the thought of a new home, or despair at having to leave the current domicile, the thought of packing up and moving fills even the bravest souls with dread. And, it isn't just the packing, there's all that unpacking and sorting out to be done at the other end.

For the student or the person leaving home for the first time, it should be a relatively pain free experience; one that can usually be accomplished with a good few boxes, a few suitcases and maybe a couple of trips in a car. For the modern couple or family however, the story is very different...

Over time, people expand to fill their homes. Families especially, generally have a ton of 'stuff'. Even the neatest of homes are packed with the accoutrements of modern living - there are just stored nicely. For people who think moving is best done with the aid of friends and family, they might want to reconsider. Moving yourself means hiring a van, and this usually means multiple trips, because you can't fit a family home into a Luton van. It means getting hold of packing boxes (although they are easily sourced online), bubble wrap or masses of newspapers, and lastly, entrusting your prized possessions to people who don't care about them as much as you. Even if you have insurance, no amount of money will compensate if someone drops the vase that was a family heirloom that came from granny. Moving yourself also means you might cause furniture damage. Fitting large sofas and wardrobes through small or awkward spaces can result in gouges in walls, and scuffed, damaged possessions.

Professional Moving Company

Although moving yourself may seem attractive financially speaking, there is a lot to be said for hiring a professional removal company. Firstly, unless you live a country pile, they will have lorries big enough to move you in one journey. Secondly, they will, if required provide all the packaging materials required. Most removal firms offer boxes, tea crates, bubble wrap, and even brown tape with easy dispenser. Professional firms also offer a packing service. They will come to your home and seemingly by magic, your home is neatly and safely stored in labelled crates and boxes ready to be put on the van and transferred directly to the right rooms in the new home. Insurance is also part of the professional removals package (although the issue of granny's smashed vase remains should it occur). Lastly, removal men are used to manoeuvring furniture through all manner of rooms, corridors and spaces. There is less likelihood of your leather sofa arm being torn or your 42" Plasma TV being scratched when being shifted by men who should know what they are doing.

Store Your Items

There is also one other advantage to opting for a removal firm over moving yourself. Should the vagaries of the housing market mean your moving out date and moving in date do not conveniently coincide, removal firms may have storage facilities. This means you and the family can book into a hotel or B&B, knowing your possessions are safe and secure, until you get the keys to your new home. This is also a helpful option if you are moving abroad and need storage before your container is available.

Let's Make Our Pantyhose All Nerdy! [Japan]

Let's Make Our Pantyhose All Nerdy!Got your pantyhose on? Sure ya do! After Japanese nerds began covering their cars, motorcycles, and bicycles with geeky images, it was only time before they moved to stockings.

"Ita" (?) refers to "pain" in Japanese, and the cars covered in geeky stickers were originally called "ita-sha" or "painmobiles" due to the pain they inflict on the owners' wallets and the pain they inflict on everyone's eyes. Since then "ita" has come to mean anything that's covered in nerdy images.

Called "ita tights" ("painful tights"), these are tights with anime or game characters drawn on them. There's a walk through below in Japanese, but the pictures should hopefully clue you in if you don't know the lingo.

Word to the wise: use white or silver tights, as they can easily show off the drawings and are easier to trace with.

2004: Delegates as Props and a Kindly Ex-Nun

Democrats convened in Boston in 2004 to nominate John Kerry and John Edwards as their standard-bearers. Participants shared their recollections with National Journal. Edited excerpts follow.

?

Minnesota delegate

During a layover en route to Boston, I got a call from a Kerry campaign delegate wrangler. He offered me the chance to sit on the stage during the speeches. All I needed to do was pass a background check, ditch the campaign buttons, avoid wearing white, curtail sudden movements, and be able to sit for long periods without access to a bathroom. I immediately saw publicity potential in the weirdness of being so excited to look at the back of famous peoples? heads.

As happens at every convention, press outnumbered delegates at least two to one, and there was almost no controversy. In this environment of journalistic famine, a human prop can seem pretty interesting. My mom called our local TV news stations and got them to do stories back home. I was picked to blog for AOL News. The American Federation of Teachers set me up to do satellite feeds to local TV and radio outlets across the country. My local paper won an award for a story about me watching the balloon drop I?d dreamed of since I was 17. By the end of the week, I was doing interviews with Education Week.

I?m pretty sure 0.00032 percent of the Kerry vote was all me.

?

Governor of New Mexico

In the 2004 convention, I was appointed chair of the event and given a prime-time speech slot. Needless to say, I thought I was hot stuff. But I soon found out that as chair I had zero power and everything was scripted. At best I got good floor passes for friends and supporters. I did get some visibility during the proceedings, but only after a lot of coaxing with the convention staff, which runs the show to the chagrin of the biggest names in the party. For my prime-time speech, I prepared extensively and had some great lines written by top speechwriters. But there was one problem: Al Sharpton. He preceded me and went way beyond his allotted eight minutes. No one dared take him off the podium, as he electrified the world. Not only was I shoved out of prime time, but my speech was relegated to the den of forgettable tomes, especially after Sharpton?s soaring rhetoric. Oh well, it was still a fun convention, and I did have a car and driver courtesy of the DNC.

?

Senior adviser to John Kerry

That year the DNC made a big effort to get all these radio talk-show hosts at the convention?not just the progressive liberal talk-show hosts, but also the more conservative ones. One of the people from the DNC said, ?You have to go to this.? Apparently the talk-show hosts had said, ?We?ll take John Kerry, or this person, or Tad Devine.? Somehow I had gotten onto the list of acceptable people.

Before I go in, a DNC staffer said, ?We want to warn you, it?s going to be really, really rough.? I went walking into this big ballroom in the Sheraton and I could see this was not a friendly crowd. I?m thinking, ?Oh my God, what am I going to say to these people and how am I going to loosen them up??

And then I see Arlene Violet, the former attorney general of Rhode Island. She was a Republican who had become a talk-show host. She was a former nun
and she had taught me in the eighth grade, at St. Michael School in Providence.

I said, ?I?m particularly pleased to see Arlene Violet today.? A little applause came up. ?I?ve known her since I was in grammar school.? I started to give a little talk about the Catholic values that I learned from people like her growing up and how that shaped me. Sister Arlene was a very convenient ally for me that day. And she said from the audience, ?He was a great kid??that was her shout-out. I used that as just a little armor.

There were some tough questions, but afterwards a person from the DNC said, ?Oh my God, that was so much better we thought it was going to be.? I had a nun who taught me in grammar school that I used to make a little connection with the crowd. I think it?s an example of how at the convention, you?ve just got to scramble; you never know the tone of the room you?re going to walk into.

?

Unsuccessful presidential candidate

The Kerry campaign made my appearance before the convention contingent on two things. First, that I release my delegates and encourage them to support Senator Kerry. Which I did. Second, that I submit my speech to the convention to them for their review. Which I resisted.

The Kerry campaign heavily edited my convention speech. I protested and considered leaving the convention. Tense negotiations produced some references to the lies which took us into war, and how Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11. My supporters were told not to display signs during my speech, but they did so anyway.

?

Boston police commissioner

It was the first presidential nominating convention since 9/11, so all eyes were on Boston. There were concerns about international terrorism, homegrown terrorists, known anarchists, and public-order challenges.

Experts predicted we would make up to 2,000 arrests, but we only arrested six people. We applied some of the new public-order techniques I saw emerge in Northern Ireland. Police there had concluded that routinely deploying police in riot gear will usually guarantee a riot. Police in ordinary uniforms should be deployed whenever possible?without helmets, shields, and long sticks. Riot police should be staged invisibly to respond quickly when required. Our three-tiered strategy worked extremely well. Police in ordinary gear were the norm on the DNC detail. When demonstrations heated up a bit, we moved to Tier Two?a mobile field force including a few dozen officers on mountain bikes.

At nine locations around the city, we had ?tactical police,? fully equipped in all gear but invisible. The only time we used a tactical unit was on the final day of the convention, when demonstrators tried to cut through the fence line. The tactical force marched in, relieved the police in ordinary gear, defused the situation, and made a few arrests. As soon as they regained control, the tactical police marched out and were replaced again with ordinary police.

?

Brother of Sen. John Kerry

The night of the vice presidential speech was also the night of the roll call?where someone from each delegation announces its vote?and I was slated to cast the Massachusetts votes.

I was high up in the family booth at the Boston Garden to watch the vice presidential speech, and I started making my way down to the floor to join the Massachusetts delegation and cast the votes. About the time we?re just getting to the floor, the roll call begins. And I hear them call out, ?Alabama,? and then ?Alabama yields to Massachusetts.? Our floor manager made a last-minute deal, bumping my time slot up 20 minutes. So my staff and I did a flying wedge across the packed convention floor. Somewhere in that scrum, I lost a BlackBerry. When we got to the Massachusetts delegation, everyone was looking around anxiously, saying ?Where?s Cam?? I grabbed the mic; there was a moment of dead air while I asked in an out-of-breath aside to my staff, ?It?s 79 votes, right?? I then introduced myself and my sister and said that the two of us knew, as the people of Massachusetts knew, that when the going was tough, there was no one you could count on better than John Kerry. I was proud to cast those votes. But I came very close to missing that moment.

Communicating 5S in the workplace | Harding Poorman Group Blog

Did you know that up to 60% of the problems that occur in the workplace can be traced to problems related to organization? Communicating a clear, effective organizational strategy across your organization is at the heart of 5S, the Japanese method of ?industrial housekeeping.?

?5S refers to five Japanese terms, each beginning with the letter ?S?:

  • Seiri, meaning organization (sort)
  • Seiton, or tidiness (set in order)
  • Seiso, meaning purity (shine)
  • Seiketsu, which means cleanliness (standardize), and
  • Shitsuke, or discipline (sustain)
PaperWarehouse Communicating 5S in the workplace

HPG employs 5S in every aspect of our business, from the stockroom to our front desk.

The 5S gold standard is to be able to find anything in your own office within 30 seconds, and in someone else?s office (or the stockroom) in five minutes.

As an Indianapolis commercial printer, HPG embraced the 5S philosophy over six years ago, and has seen dramatic results in increased print and project productivity, clearer communication, better on time projects, reduced product and energy waste, and enthused employees.

Here are some examples of the type of ?business waste? 5S can correct:

  • Handling order entry more than once.
  • Misunderstood or unclear goals.
  • Waiting for information, meetings, signatures, a returned phone call, a broken computer, etc.
  • Creating more efficient ways to handle a job.
  • Processes competing with each other.
  • Looking for electronic or paper files.
  • Lack of communication.
  • Printing out a report when only a summary will do.
  • Reduced meeting times.
  • Filing (95% of files that are stored are waste).
  • Inspecting (inspections reveal defects only after they have already occurred).

What could 5S do to improve communication, smooth processes and improve productivity in your office?

Australia's Freney makes it fantastic five

Australia's Jacqueline Freney on Monday won her fifth gold of the Games in the stand-out performance of the day, after a row involving sprinter Oscar Pistorius overshadowed the sporting action.

World record holder Freney, who has cerebral palsy, took gold in a new Paralympic best of 1min 9.39sec in the S7 100m freestyle to add to her titles in the S7 50m butterfly, S7 100m backstroke and SM7 200m individual medley.

Then with team-mates Ellie Cole, Madison Elliott and Katherine Downey, the 20-year-old added the women's 4x100m freestyle 34 points relay, making it a clean sweep for the Aussies after the men's team triumphed on Sunday.

In that race, Matthew Cowdrey bagged his 10th Paralympic title in a career spanning three Games, needing just one more gold to become his country's most successful Paralympian.

"It's absolutely incredible, I can't explain how happy I am," said Freney afterwards. "I've got eight events and my main one hasn't even started yet, so these are just bonuses to me. Icing on the cake."

Earlier Britain's swim queen Ellie Simmonds won the women's S6 200m individual medley in 3min 5.39sec, breaking the world record she set in qualifying and adding to her S6 400m freestyle title.

The teenager, who has a form of dwarfism, won the 400m and the 100m freestyle in Beijing four years ago at the age of just 13 and has become one of the faces of the London Games.

Poland's Natalia Partyka -- one of only two Paralympians to compete at this year's Olympics -- won gold for the third consecutive Games in the women's singles Class 10 table tennis.

"It has been a really good year for me, now I'm thinking about Rio (de Janeiro in 2016). To win a medal at the Olympics is now my dream. I want to achieve the same at the Olympics as I did at the Paralympics," she said.

Partyka, who was born without a right hand and forearm, beat China's Yang Qian 3-2, just weeks after she and Pistorius competed at the Olympics.

Pistorius dominated the headlines on Monday after he sensationally lost his T44 200m crown to Brazil's Alan Oliveira on Sunday but then claimed the length of his rivals' artificial running blades was unfair.

The 25-year-old South African, a double amputee since childhood, issued an apology about the timing of the comments, although not the substance.

"I do believe that there is an issue here and I welcome the opportunity to discuss with the IPC (International Paralympic Committee) but I accept that raising these concerns immediately as I stepped off the track was wrong," he said in a statement.

The IPC responded by saying the prostheses used by all eight runners in the final were legitimate and had not exceeded rules regarding length.

Nevertheless, they agreed to meet Pistorius to discuss his concerns.

The row erupted as 50 gold medals were on offer in seven sports on the fifth day of competition at the Games, which end on Sunday.

On the track, El Amin Chentouf of Morocco smashed the world best by more than 30sec in the T12 5,000m for visually impaired and blind athletes, finishing in 13min 53.77sec.

Kenya's Samwel Mushai Kimani, with guide runner James Boit, romped to a new world record of 3min 58.37 in the T11 1,500m, beating Brazil's Odair Santos, who was also inside his previous world best of 4min 03.66sec.

Wheelchair racer Ryan Martin of the United States added the T52 400m to his 100m title while Ireland's Michael McKillop outclassed the field to take the middle-distance double in the T37 1,500m for athletes with cerebral palsy.

The Northern Ireland-born 22-year-old, who had already successfully retained his 800m title from Beijing, had enough of a lead over Australia's Brad Scott and Mohammed Charmi of Tunisia to begin celebrating in the back straight.

Fiji and India also got in the medals, with Iliesa Delana, an amputee, winning gold in the men's F42 high jump, with Girisha Nagarajegowda Hosanagara winning silver.

China were way out in front in the overall medal table, crossing the 100 medal mark and nearing 50 golds, with Britain in second and Australia, Russia and Ukraine battling it out for third spot.

BCom student is ready for WTO

Foreign Minister Bob Carr, Opposition Leader Tony Abbott and former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd were among the high profile politicians that Bachelor of Commerce student Natalie Ngo met with when she attended a briefing in Canberra to prepare for her role in the Global Voices Australian Youth Delegations to the World Trade Organisation Public Forum which is to be held in Switzerland in late September.

Hundreds of people applied to Global Voices to represent the University of Melbourne at the WTO Public Forum to be held in Geneva.

The briefing aims to prepare Natalie, and another five Youth Delegates, to write an in-depth research paper as part of her Research Fellowship with Global Voices in the lead-up to the WTO Public Forum. Natalie will receive a fully sponsored package from the Faculty of Business and Economics to attend the Forum.

?The experience was unbelievable to me because I couldn?t accept that it is real, it is happening and we were meeting the people who are running our country and trying their best? Natalie said, ?I learnt that politicians are people who are just doing their best?.

?In addition to the politicians, I realised that there are so many smart and talented young people out there who I don?t get to meet every day and it makes me want to better myself and equip myself with stronger knowledge of current affairs and politics? she said.

During the two day visit in late August, Natalie also met with Shadow Foreign Minister Julie Bishop, Trade Minister Craig Emerson and the Ambassador of Switzerland, His Excellency Marcel Stutz.

?I really enjoyed asking Craig Emerson questions one-on-one and hearing about his opinion on trade practices and found that Tony Abbott was just an ordinary person who was very excited to meet us? Natalie said ?I thought Julie Bishop was the most amazing woman; truly intelligent and she seemed genuinely happy to be there?.

Hubert Wu from Global Voices said that ?this is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity for Natalie?.

The Delegates also attended Question Time where they received a special mention on the floor of the Australian Parliament by the Acting Speaker Anna Burke, which was Natalie?s favourite experience from the trip because it was so heated. Natalie was also able to attend a media workshop by Channel Ten?s Hugh Riminton.

Natalie found Julie Bishop inspiring, ?I could see why she is Tony Abbott?s Deputy? she said.

Dean of the Faculty of Business and Economics, Professor Paul Kofman, said ?We are proud and excited to support Natalie in representing the Faculty of Business and Economics and the University of Melbourne at such an influential and meaningful event?

The WTO Public Forum is a major event at which governments, non-governmental organisations, academics, businesses and students can come together to discuss the multilateral trading system, this year focusing on the question ?is multilateralism in crisis?? Natalie will write her research paper on the trade-related aspect of intellectual property, considering Australians obligations under certain agreements that outline a minimum standard for every member country to uphold in protecting intellectual property.

?I would advise others seeking experiences like this to show people you have an eager and willing attitude, and make it clear you want to better yourself? Natalie said.

Natalie attended The Mac.Robertson Girls? High School and is now a Bachelor of Commerce student at The University of Melbourne. She is one of two recipients of the prestigious Commerce Opportunity Bursary Scholarship offered by the Faculty of Business and Economics. Natalie hopes to enter into the Melbourne JD upon completion of her course. She says this experience has affirmed her desire to major in Commercial and Corporate Law.

Fare La Scarpetta: Founding Farmers Restaurant in D.C. and Laico's ...

Founding Farmers' Stray and Hay?

When I was a kid, my grandparents used to take me to eat at?Laico's Italian Restaurant in Jersey City, New Jersey. I would always order the "straw and hay" pasta. A ginormous dish of pasta with a creamy sauce, bacon and peas would come out and I'm pretty sure I always ate the whole thing.? Founding Farmers Restaurant in Washington, D.C., offers a delicious version of this dish with homemade, wide noodles. They add in some vegetables for good measure: asparagus and mushrooms. While a heavy pasta dish isn't a recommended hot-summer's-day meal, it was worth a taste of childhood.? To prepare your own Stray and Hay pasta dish, you might try Wolfgang Puck's recipe, with or without the two types of pasta (two types seems a little fussy.) I think I'll be returning to my childhood the next time I'm in New Jersey for Laico's (updated?) version of "Paglia e Fieno" with shrimp and scallops and some vodka thrown in for good measure.?
