War rips apart families, neighbors in Syria

BEIRUT (AP) ? BEIRUT ? It's at night that worries over her children hit the matriarch of the Khayyat family hardest, tormenting her as she tries to sleep.

Four of her sons have joined the tens of thousands of rebels fighting to topple President Bashar Assad. The fifth is a sergeant in Assad's army, a draftee. Worsening her troubles, her own brother no longer speaks to her because of her sons in the rebellion.

"This is what it has come to in Syria," said the 60-year-old Sunni Muslim woman as she sat in the family home on the outskirts of Damascus. "This is my son, and the other is my son, but each is fighting on a different side in this war. It burns my heart." Because of fears of reprisals against any of her children, she spoke on condition she not be identified except by the name of her large, extended family.

More than any of the other uprisings that toppled longtime dictators in the Arab world, the civil war in Syria has sharply polarized the country ? ripping apart families and neighbors and bringing a bloody end to decades of coexistence.

The war has riven Syria along sectarian lines. The Sunni majority forms the backbone of the revolt. The minority Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiism, backs the regime of Assad, who is himself an Alawite and has stacked his leadership with members of the community. Other minorities like Christians largely support Assad or stand on the sidelines, worried that Assad's fall would bring a more Islamist rule over them.

But behind the broad outlines, even families within the same community have been wrenched apart.

Some are torn by ideology: In a family, some remain fiercely loyal to Assad, alienating those who became regime opponents. Despite years of discrimination under the Assad family rule, even some Sunni Muslims back him, whether out of fear of the alternative or belief in the regime narrative boasting of Syria as an oasis of secularism and stability in a turbulent region.

Others families are divided by circumstances: Young army conscripts find themselves fighting for a regime they fear defecting from even as their brothers join the rebels.

The violence, which activists say has killed more than 40,000 people since March 2011, has unleashed animosity and sectarian hatreds that many say they didn't even know existed. Tit-for-tat killings between sects have swelled, as has segregation as Sunnis and Alawites flee each other. On social media web sites, venomous accusations and insults fly between regime opponents and Assad loyalists, who they often deride as "Minhibakjis" ? Arabic for "we love you." A third group of Syrians is opposed to both camps.

"Syrian society has been deeply fragmented along multiple lines which may take generations to repair," said Randa Kassis, a Syrian anthropologist opposed to Assad's regime. "Anyone of a different opinion is immediately being cast as an agent or a stooge."

"It will take a lot of work to instill a culture of tolerance and acceptance, of give and take among people," said the Paris-based Kassis, who founded the Movement for a Pluralistic Society, an organization working for a secular and united civil society in Syria.

In that atmosphere, a difference of opinion within a family can swell into a bitter split.

Mohammed, a former sergeant from the southern town of Daraa, where the uprising began, said he defected early on because he could not bring himself to open fire on protesters. He said he "felt like his heart was on the other side."

But his father and his brother, who serves in the air force security department in Daraa, remain hardcore regime supporters, convinced that those protesting are foreign-backed terrorists. Mohammed spoke on condition he be identified only by his first name for fear his brother would be harmed for the connection to an uprising supporter.

"The first few months were hell," he said. "My father forbade any talk at home of the revolution. When I told him I intended to defect, he grabbed me and said: 'If you want to defect, go do it somewhere else and don't bring shame to this family.'"

Mohammed said he joined friends in the central province of Homs and has been fighting there since.

"I think my brother is a coward. But I don't blame him, each person's tolerance level is different," he said.

An opposition activist in Damascus said his family's divisions are a generational struggle. He said his family has long opposed the regime but are of a generation that shunned activism, knowing it would bring harsh retaliation.

So "when I quit my job as a magazine editor to dedicate my time to the revolution, they went crazy," he said in an interview through Skype.

"Sometimes they shut me off for days, they don't talk to me, then they ease up," he said.

The rebel sons of the Khayyat family matriarch seemed unsure whether their brother was serving in Assad's military willingly or out of fear if he defected. The brother was drafted six months before the uprising began and is serving in the eastern Deir el-Zour province. Tens of thousands of soldiers have defected over the past 20 months, many now fighting alongside the rebels.

At the Khayyat family home in Kisweh, south of Damascus, the matriarch's eldest son walks in slowly, dragging his foot because of a injury during recent fighting. He was the first of the brothers to join the Free Syrian Army rebels, after he became convinced armed resistance was needed against Assad's brutal crackdown on peaceful protests.

He hasn't seen his army brother for months. He and other members of the family spoke on condition their first names not be used for fear of reprisals.

"I know there may come a day when my brother and I might stand face to face against each other, but this is a war between right and wrong," he said.

Another brother with the rebels is convinced their military sibling is staying unwillingly. The last time he spoke with him was last month during the Eid al-Adha holiday.

"He couldn't say anything beyond 'how are you'. He knows he is under surveillance," said the brother, who was fired from his job as teacher at a private school for taking part in an anti-government protest. "If he defects, they would not forgive him, he would be killed."

"The struggle is no longer just between the regime and the opposition. It is now at the workplace, in every family and in every home," he said.

Their father, who was imprisoned several times during the uprising, is now in hiding, a wanted man. Their mother starts to cry as she tells of how her own brother has not spoken to her in a year and a half because of her rebel sons.

"But I stick up to my sons because they are fighting for what they believe in," she said. "As a mother, I don't differentiate between my sons."

"All I want is to have them all gathered around the same meal at home again."

Author Shares Struggle of Being Adopted During Greek Civil War ...

Joanna Sonya Giangardella was just 10 years-old when her mother was forced to make the difficult decision of placing her in a United Nations-sponsored adoption program during the Greek Civil War. Joanna?s father had passed away and the family found themselves living in poverty in Pyrgos, so America seemed a more ideal environment for a young child to grow up in. However, no one told Joanna?s mother that she would not be able to see or hear from her child again, or that the young girl would be put in a non-Greek speaking home that shunned her from learning about her heritage.

Many years later, Joanna, who was beginning a family of her own, decided it was time to head back to Greece. The journey ? from being a 10 year-old who was internationally adopted, to reconnecting with her mother as an adult ? is documented in her book, The Girl From the Tower: A Journey of Lies.

Giangardella took the time out to speak with Greek Reporter about her experiences and struggles, and offers advice on what other Greeks who are searching for their families can do to find them.

When did you decide to write your book, The Girl from the Tower: A Journey of Lies?

Twenty years ago, I went back to college for my degree in Fine Arts [and] part of my curriculum was creative writing. I then wrote a short story about my journey to America as a 10 year-old. My professor suggested I move forward and continue to write the whole story and send it out for publication. I wrote a synopsis and query, sending it out to 16 publishers. I received eight responses requesting the first two chapters. I stopped there, afraid to continue.

Was it difficult for you to come to the decision to reunite with your relatives years after you went to America?

No. I never stopped thinking about them; I was terribly homesick?not knowing how to contact them as a child. Later, when I married, I began my search, writing to Red Cross and UNICEF without a response. I decided that when I was financially able, I would travel to Greece and knock on doors.

Did you have concerns about seeing them?

The only concern came from a re-occurring dream. Upon my anxious and excited arrival, no one wanted me, no one cared. I would wake up from this dream concerned that they forgot who I was, ignoring me.

Your adopted parents were Russian and Bulgarian, and refused to let you speak Greek or associate with your culture, which is described in the book. Do you speak Greek now, or have you incorporated the culture into your life in the present day?

Yes, when reunited with my family I traveled back almost every year. I immersed myself into the culture of which I felt more at home then here in the US. Each time I returned, I learned more Greek. Reading Greek came the easiest for me.

Did you befriend any of the other children who were in the adoption program? Were their experiences similar?

Unfortunately I have met only a few recently. Their experience here in the US had been very different then mine ? more loving, more accepted. Growing up, I was not allowed to visit or befriend any Greek children other then my adopted brother who was from Greece as well. He was left on the doorsteps of an orphanage.

For Greek adopted children that may be looking for their birth parents, how would you suggest they begin the process?

First, if they have any knowledge of their Greek family name and place of birth they can write to the church, they have baptismal records; someone always knows someone with that name. Second, if they have nothing to follow, there is a lawyer I know in Athens who has all archives of adoptees from that period and can help for a very small cost.

Is there anything they should prepare themselves for emotionally?

It depends of their state of mind. If it has been their passion to find where they come from and re-connect with their families without criticism of the circumstance of ?why? they were adopted, then it will be a rewarding journey. They need to prepare themselves that the story behind their adoption can be heart wrenching; mothers die without knowing what happened to their babies once left on the door steps of orphanages all over Greece.

With the current economic and political upheaval in Greece, Greeks were finding themselves too poor to care for their children. What are your thoughts on that 60 years after you, and Greeks, went through a similar situation?

What I have found in Greece, as part of their culture, is that it takes ?a village? to raise children in Greece; it is exactly that. Children are never alone. They have grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and [in] some cases, neighbors that look after them. Here they are disconnected with extended family, some never see each other. Only in situations of children having no one or [a] life-threatening situation would it be likely for them to be placed in a foster or adopted program. There are many loving people out there; I know that to be true, but there is nothing stronger than family.

Greece will overcome their difficult time as they have done before many times because of loyalty to their family and loyalty to their history.

What do you hope readers will take away from your story?

There is nothing stronger then the love between a mother and a child; that history repeats itself because people forget; that children are continuing to be exploited because of greed and indifference; to bring awareness to an event not found in the history books. I hope my story will be read by people in the US so that my mission of finding others will happen. Most of all I want to publish my book in Greece, written in Greek, because I think especially now it will give them ?hope? to those still looking for their loved ones, but also that my experience can happen to their children if they send them away. In a time of despair, keep your family close, keep your children closer. As a mother and grandmother I understand and forgave my mother because she trusted people. She endured pain, guilt and a weeping heart but was never forgotten. Her whole life was always seeing to others needs, never her own.

President Obama Diagnoses Mitt Romney with a Case of "Romnesia"

Confession: posts have been few and far apart this year. One consequence, other than mixing it up with you, I?ve missed talking at all about this year?s election. Don?t worry, it?s not a case of Romnesia. What?s that I said.. Romnesia? It?s a condition that President Obama diagnosed Mitt Romney with. President Obama doesn?t hold a medical degree, but the symptoms ? Mitt Romney forgetting positions he held a month ago, a week, hey, even hours earlier ? are readily apparent.

At a campaign even today in Fairfax, Virginia, President Obama laid out his case for this sickness and best of all, the hope for a cure, ?Obamacare covers pre-existing conditions!?

Man arrested in Britain over killing of Northern Irish policeman

LONDON (Reuters) - A man from Northern Ireland was arrested in Britain on Monday in connection with the death of Northern Ireland policeman Ronan Kerr, who was killed in April last year when a bomb exploded under his car, the Police Service of Northern Ireland said.

The 22-year-old man, from Omagh in County Tyrone, was detained in Milton Keynes, England, as police widened their investigation to northwest England. Police said they were conducting searches in Northern Ireland and northwest England.

Kerr, 25, was the first policeman killed in the British-controlled province for two years. A Catholic, Kerr was a new recruit and a symbol of Northern Ireland's new police service, which before the peace deal was predominantly made up of Protestants and viewed with scepticism by many Catholics.

The arrest of the suspect, who was not named, was made by the North West Counter Terrorism Unit at the request of PSNI Serious Crime Branch detectives, according to the PSNI.

A prison officer, David Black, was shot and killed in his car earlier this month, and a group of militant Irish nationalists claimed responsibility.

International monitors confirmed in 2005 that the Provisional Irish Republican Army had given up all its weapons, but dissidents disenchanted with the peace process, which largely ended three decades of violence in which over 3,600 people died, have increased violent activity in recent years.

Earlier this year, militant nationalist groups in Northern Ireland united under the banner of the so-called New IRA.

GM may acquire Ally's Europe, Latin America ... - Automotive News

Thought Leadership

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Ally Financial Inc. is nearing a deal to sell its auto financing operations in Europe and Latin America for around $4 billion, with General Motors emerging as the lead bidder if the company decides to sell those operations as a whole, two sources familiar with the situation said.

Ally is still considering whether to split the business geographically - Europe and Latin America - and sell it to two different parties, the sources said on Friday. A deal could come as soon as next week, they said.

Details of an agreement have not been finalized, and the outcome could change, the sources said. Ally is still talking to a handful of financial institutions that have made separate bids for its European and Latin American assets, they said.

Ally, which is 74-percent owned by the U.S. government after a series of bailouts during the financial crisis, announced in May a plan to sell its international operations in a bid to speed up repayment to taxpayers.

GM, also partly owned by the U.S. government after its own taxpayer-funded bailout, declined to comment.

An Ally spokeswoman said, "We continue to be focused on maximizing shareholder value and finding the best solutions for the remaining international operations."

Once known as GMAC, Ally is the former auto lending arm of GM, which has been rebuilding its finance operations. The U.S. automaker bought AmeriCredit Corp in 2010 and in August disclosed that it was among the bidders for Ally's international operations.

Ally Chief Executive Michael Carpenter said last week that the lender had interest from multiple parties for its Europe and Latin American operations and that he expected a sale to be announced this month.

Last month, Ally agreed to sell its Canadian auto finance and deposit business to Royal Bank of Canada for $4.1 billion and its Mexican insurance unit to ACE Ltd for $865 million.

Those two sales are expected to bring in about $5 billion in proceeds, producing pretax estimated gains of $1.2 billion, Ally said last week. The European and Latin American operations have a book value of about $3.3 billion.

Ally is focusing on U.S. auto lending and banking in a bid to turn its business around. Its Residential Capital mortgage unit filed for bankruptcy in May, and it is looking to sell most of its remaining mortgage operations.

Of the $17 billion it owes the U.S. government, Ally has paid back $5.8 billion, including dividend payments.

Denon Globe Cruiser AH-W200

Denon's 2012 earphone onslaught continues with the Globe Cruiser AH-W200, which sounds a lot less goofy than, say, the Urban Raver AH-C300 . The Globe Cruiser is a stereo Bluetooth pair of in-canal earphones ($179.99 list). It's a worthy competitor in the space, especially for lovers of deep bass; this is a sound signature for modern mixes where sub-bass frequencies often play a central role. There's some distortion at top volumes, which is a bummer, but the Globe Cruiser's overall performance at less intense volumes is laudable, and it comes with a nice array of accessories, so the good ultimately outweighs the bad.

Design
While the Globe Cruiser is wireless, its in-canal earpieces are connected with a single, behind-the-head cable. The earpieces themselves are rather bulky, but such is the way with wireless in-ear designs: You either get a shirt-clip compartment that houses the wireless receiver electronics, or you have them stuffed into chunky earpieces. The good news is that the metallic gray-and-black design sits comfortably in your ear, with a flexible, over-the-ear connecting piece between the actual in-canal drivers and the circuitry compartments.

The right earpiece houses controls for Play/Pause (which doubles as Power and Pairing) and Volume, as well as the microphone, the micro-USB charging connection, and the cable connection, which facilitates wired use.Denon Globe Cruiser inline

The Globe Cruiser ships with a USB cable for charging and a 3.5mm audio cable for the above-mentioned audio jack. There's no actual charger included, which is standard for Bluetooth earphones, but I'm going to keep complaining about it until some company starts including them?you shouldn't have to rely on a computer (or buy a USB charger) in order to juice up your earphones.

Also included in the handsome, sturdy black leather zippered soft case: four pairs of silicon eartips (in various sizes), one pair of Comply foam eartips, an airplane jack adapter, and, so you can loop the case from your backpack, a carabiner.

One brief note about fit and audio performance: the Globe Cruiser sounds tremendously different without a secure in-ear seal. This is true of all in-canal earphones, but because of the weight of the earpieces, it's tougher to get a perfect seal, and it's essential that you experiment with all of the ear tip sizes or you risk having a dramatically reduced bass response.

The Globe Cruiser employs Bluetooth 3.0 and supports the aptX codec. Denon estimates battery life at roughly five hours per full charge.

Performance
Assuming you find the right eartips, the Globe Cruiser provides a tremendous amount of sub-bass presence. On songs with or without deep bass, the Globe Cruiser can sound thunderous. Somehow, this thunder doesn't ever really overwhelm the overall mix. This is not a pair for audiophiles, but the bass isn't so ridiculously booming that things sound horrible. In fact, if you're a fan of deep bass, the Globe Cruiser does a good job of bringing the sub-bass up in the mix without losing definition or articulation in the sub-low to mid-low range.

Unfortunately, at top volumes, deep bass tracks tend to distort. Our bass test track, The Knife's "Silent Shout" became quite distorted and fuzzy at about 85 percent volume on an iPhone 4S with the volume of the earphones set to maximum. This is not a safe listening level, and at moderate listening levels, distortion does not occur. However, it does, on certain tracks, start to appear at loud volumes that users could conceivably listen at. Again, it's not a good idea to listen to music at levels this high, but if you do, be aware that these earphones will likely distort on tracks that have substantial low end.

The Globe Cruiser also packs a crisp, high-end punch?it helps vocals stand out against the bass-boosted mix, and it sounds great for most pop and vocal-driven music. The treble's presence makes the attack of the kick drum loop on Jay-Z & Kanye West's "No Church in the Wild" hit with a serious edge, while the sub-bass synth part rumbles below. The various vocals on this track all stand out over the busy mix, and the Globe Cruiser does a good job of providing thump and high-end grit without ever losing clarity. This is a sculpted sound signature, for certain, but it sounds pretty exciting.

On classical pieces, like John Adams' "The Chairman Dances," the enhanced bass can be a tad too intense, with the lower register strings and percussion sounding almost as if they were amplified instruments instead of acoustic. It doesn't sound awful, but if instrumental genres are your bread and butter, the Globe Cruiser lacks the subtlety and balance that you're likely seeking. The highs sound magnificent, but the lows are just a bit too intense here.

In this price range, the Phiaton PS 20 BT offers quality audio performance with a less sculpted sound signature, but it lacks the crispness of the Globe Cruiser. However, the PS 20 BT uses a shirt-clip compartment instead in-earpiece circuitry?if that appeals to you, it's worth checking out. There's also the Phiaton PS 210 BTNC , which combines Bluetooth streaming and some passable active noise cancellation. If comfort and secure fit are your main priorities, however, you might want to consider an on-ear headphone pair rather than bulky in-ear Bluetooth earphones. The Sennheiser MM 100 is an excellent, affordable, lightweight on-ear option, and the bulkier, more expensive Beats by Dr. Dre Wireless offers serious Bluetooth power, with distortion-free, booming low-end?though the headband can get a bit uncomfortable after a while. The Globe Cruiser, however, offers exciting audio performance at moderate levels for bass lovers. The distortion shouldn't be a deal-breaker, especially if you don't listen to music with seriously deep bass and at levels that are unsafely high to begin with.

Affiliate Programs - Start Your Own Online Business | Dave In China ...

?The place is all the assistance I?m imagined to get. I have been buying ezine and classified advert builders and signing up for Echecks and Digital credit score cards. In the meantime I have no business and no adverts set up. When does all this happen? Let?s go here. I spent all day on this. I?m operating out of time.?

I child you not, this is the sum whole of an precise e-mail that hit my inbox this week. Not solely did I not know this particular person from Adam, this was the first and solely e-mail I had ever acquired from her and to at the present time, I do not know what she?s speaking about. Presumably, she signed up for one of many affiliate packages I promote from my website and was asking, in her own inimitable model, for my help. Though I am at all times ready and keen to help anyone I can, this is most positively NOT the way in which to go about asking for it. For sure, I let her know what I thought of her approach in NO uncertain terms.

The attitude displayed in this particular person?s e-mail to me (and she is in no way an remoted instance) exemplifies why so many people fail to make successful of their on-line businesses. Leaving aside the utter rudeness of the approach, notice the impatience, the expectation to be up and operating in a day, the HURRY, the obvious perception that real world ideas akin to courtesy and good manners do not apply on-line (they do). Suppose this particular person goes to final the gap? What kinds of tactics do you suppose she is capable of resorting to in pursuit of the almighty dollar?

So, let?s take a realistic have a look at affiliate packages, what they can and may?t do for your enterprise and tips on how to maximize your possibilities of creating a profitable, long-time period business with them.

WHAT IS AN AFFILIATE PROGRAM?

An associates program (also called a reseller, affiliate, referral or partnership program) is essentially a revenue-sharing arrangement whereby you, the affiliate, obtain fee from the proprietor of a services or products that you simply promote on their behalf.

Affiliate packages are a wonderful approach for the new web entrepreneur to begin a web-based business.

TYPES OF AFFILIATE PROGRAMS

There are numerous varieties of affiliate programs.

The most simple involves you, the affiliate, placing a banner advert, graphic or text link at your website which is linked to the site of the business you are promoting. This link is coded along with your distinctive affiliate ID so that the site customer is recorded at the goal website as having originated from your website, thereby allowing you to be credited with the sale.

Cost is usually a set share of the sale value (fee) or ?pay per click?, where the affiliate is paid a specific amount for each time a website customer clicks on the link at the affiliate?s website, whether or not or not a sale is made.

The extra subtle affiliate packages are multi-tier and allow the affiliate to earn commissions not solely on the visitors they instantly seek advice from the goal website but in addition a proportion of sales generated by their sub-affiliates.

BENEFITS OF AFFILIATE PROGRAMS

The greatest benefit of affiliate packages is that if you end up simply starting out in your personal on-line business you do not have to worry about creating your personal product or service. You simply promote someone else?s and get a share of the revenue pie on your efforts.

You additionally do not have to concern yourself with warehousing, transport or logistics headaches. All of this is handled by the business whose merchandise/companies you are promoting. All you want concentrate on is driving visitors to that business?s website. This means that a high proportion of your revenue is profit.

The proprietor of the product/service can be accountable for accumulating fee, customer support and the myriad different details that come up on a each day basis in operating the business.

DISADVANTAGES OF AFFILIATE PROGRAMS

The main and obvious disadvantage of affiliate packages is that it?s the proprietor of the product/service who earns the lion?s share of the profit on the sale.

You are engaged on commission. You will NEVER earn by means of associates program commissions as a lot as you may earn by means of earnings from producing and promoting your personal product/service.

As a result, affiliate packages represent a high alternative price when you consider what you might earn when you as an alternative channeled the time and power you spend on selling affiliate packages into creating and selling your personal product/service.

For that reason, it doesn?t make sound business sense to rely solely on associates program earnings for the longer term progress of your business.

Instead, consider them as a approach of dipping your toe within the water if you?re first getting started, and a nice little sideline once you have created your personal product/service. Do NOT build your enterprise around affiliate packages with the intention it will at all times be the backbone of your business. You may be stunting your personal progress when you do.

Roger Federer reaches semifinals at ATP finals

LONDON (AP) ? On an indoor court, Roger Federer can win even when he's not playing his best.

He proved that again Thursday at the ATP finals, beating David Ferrer 6-4, 7-6 (5) and advancing to the semifinals with a group match to spare despite struggling with his serve and scrambling to stay in the long rallies.

"I've been very successful over the years. Probably won most titles indoors, maybe more than all the other guys combined," said Federer, who called it a natural surface for him. "But that doesn't make me the best this week."

However, he is the big favorite.

The two-time defending champion is looking for his seventh title at the season-ending event for the top eight players in the world. He is 2-0 at the O2 Arena, with his last group match against Juan Martin del Potro on Saturday.

Del Potro will play Janko Tipsarevic in the other Group B match later Thursday.

Federer made only 53 percent of his first serves against Ferrer. And in his first two service games alone, he was forced to save six break points.

But he did save them, and three others, while getting broken only once.

"I definitely needed a good second serve, especially in the first set," Federer said. "I didn't have that many serves in play the way I wanted to. Either the rhythm was off a bit or I wasn't pushing enough with the legs or whatever it might have been."

With the victory, Federer improved his record over Ferrer to 14-0. In 10 years of facing each other, Ferrer has won only three sets against the 17-time Grand Slam champion.

That looked like it was going to change on Thursday.

The retriever Ferrer got to ball after ball to extend rallies and keep Federer on the move. In the opening game, the Spaniard quickly took a 0-40 lead but failed to convert any of his three break chances.

He had three more chances in the third game ? minutes after Federer had broken Ferrer's serve ? but again Federer was able to pull through and hold.

"I had a lot of chances ... I can't do it," said Ferrer, who won the Paris Masters last week for his tour-leading seventh title of the season. "Sometimes with these players, if I don't take my chance, I don't win the important points; it's very difficult to win these matches."

Ferrer finally managed a break to get back on serve at 3-2, but Federer didn't allow another.

However, both were forced to save break points in the second set. Federer saved two, and Ferrer one.

"Ferrer showed why he's so tough to beat. He makes you hit the extra shot. He makes it physical," Federer said. "You know that mentally he's not going to go anywhere."

Ferrer has a chance to overtake Rafael Nadal as the fourth-ranked player in the world, but he may need to win the title to achieve it.

"I don't think about that because Rafa is injured. For me, I don't care if I finish 4 or 5," Ferrer said. "I am trying to do my best to have a great tournament here. And after here, then next week I will have a very important Davis Cup final."

Non-invasive technique for predicting patients' response to chemotherapy

ScienceDaily (Nov. 7, 2012) ? Researchers have developed a non-invasive way of predicting how much of a cancer-killing drug is absorbed by a tumour. The preliminary study, which will be reported at the 24th EORTC-NCI-AACR [1] Symposium on Molecular Targets and Cancer Therapeutics in Dublin, Ireland, November 8, was conducted in lung cancer patients and it also revealed that less than one per cent of the drug, docetaxel, is absorbed by the tumours [2].

Dr Astrid van der Veldt (MD, PhD), from the VU University Medical Center in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, told the Symposium: "This finding underscores the fact that only a small amount of drug accumulates in tumours and indicates that there is an urgent need for strategies that selectively enhance drug delivery to tumours. For that purpose, the direct effects of other, anti-cancer drugs on metabolism as well as drug delivery to tumours need to be investigated, as other drugs may also affect metabolism and drug delivery to tumours."

Until now, there has been no accurate way of assessing how much of an anti-cancer drug is absorbed by a tumour and, therefore, what effect the drug is having on the tumour, without invasive surgery to extract samples.

Dr van der Veldt and her colleagues used an imaging technique called positron emission tomography (PET) to track very small tracer doses of the anti-cancer drug docetaxel, which had been radiolabeled with the positron emitting radionuclide carbon-11, in the patient. The PET scan was able to follow this tiny [11C]docetaxel dose in the body non-invasively and provide information on how much reached the tumour, the amount absorbed by the tumour and its effect on the tumour (the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of the drug). By using a microdose of docetaxel in this way, the patients were protected from any docetaxel-induced toxic side-effects that could occur if the docetaxel was administered at therapeutic doses.

Dr van der Veldt said: "A potential problem with this is the fact that the behaviour of [11C]docetaxel in the tumour at tracer doses may be different from its behaviour at therapeutic doses. Therefore, we investigated whether a PET study using tracer doses of [11C]docetaxel could predict tumour uptake of docetaxel at therapeutic doses."

Six lung cancer patients who had not been treated previously with docetaxel underwent two PET scans, one with the tracer dose of docetaxel, and another during a combined infusion of a tracer dose and a therapeutic dose (75mg/m2) of docetaxel. The researchers compared the tumour uptake of both the tracer and therapeutic doses of docetaxel and found that the tracer dose correctly predicted the tumour uptake of the therapeutic dose.

"This study showed that microdosing data from PET scans of [11C]docetaxel could be used to reliably predict tumour uptake of docetaxel during chemotherapy, which was also associated with tumour response to docetaxel therapy. This is important information for us to have when we are treating patients, as it helps us to predict how well the drug is working and whether it might be better to switch to some other, potentially more effective treatment. The findings of this study warrant larger clinical studies investigating the predictive value of initial [11C]docetaxel uptake for tumour response to docetaxel therapy," said Dr van der Veldt. "In addition, the present study provides a framework for investigating the PET microdosing concept for other radiolabeled anti-cancer drugs in patients with other cancers.

"To the best of our knowledge, the present study is the first in which absolute tumour uptake of chemotherapy is measured non-invasively in patients."

Additional analyses revealed that less than one per cent of the therapeutic dose of docetaxel that was infused in the patients was finally taken up by the tumour tissue. This uptake might also be affected by other drugs that are being delivered at the same time. "For example, in a recent study, we have shown that the drug bevacizumab, which inhibits the creation of new blood vessels supplying the tumour, induces a rapid and significant reduction in delivery of [11C]docetaxel to tumours in non-small cell lung cancer patients," said Dr van der Veldt.

She concluded: "Although, at present, [11C]docetaxel PET cannot be used on a large scale because of its complexity and high costs, it is a promising technique for several investigations. [11C]docetaxel PET may be useful to predict response to docetaxel therapy and select patients for docetaxel-containing treatment strategies, thereby contributing to more personalised treatment planning in individual cancer patients. In addition, [11C]docetaxel PET may help to define the optimal design of large clinical trials to investigate the effects of drug scheduling on efficacy in cancer patients."

Professor Stefan Sleijfer, the scientific chair of the EORTC-NCI-AACR Symposium, from Erasmus University Medical Centre (The Netherlands), commented: "This study is interesting because it provides more insight into the amount of drug that reaches the place where it should go: the tumour cell. Because of technical limitations, this is a relatively unexplored field of research, which is of great importance. Eventually, this may lead to better prediction of outcome and novel combinations augmenting the penetration of active anti-tumour agents into the tumours."

Great Self Improvement Information That Can Benefit You ...

TIP! Several people have difficulty meeting someone worthwhile to date. Explore your options on the Internet.

Self improvement, including positive thinking techniques, can really help you live a better life. The following tips describe easy ways to improve your personality, moral character, and way of living.

TIP! Take a step to cure your anxiety by going with a friend to a movie. This allows you to be in a social setting without the added pressure of talking to a lot of people.

Think about yourself, and a particular part of you that requires improvement, and put your focus squarely on that one thing. There may be multiple things that you would like to improve about yourself, but by limiting your focus to one item at a time, you improve your chances for success. Adopting new habits one at a time will make it easier to maintain them.

TIP! Look for the things you admire or appreciate about others and give them compliments. Resist the urge to focus on the negative and instead speak out in kindness to others and you will find yourself being kinder to yourself, as well.

The most important person to please is yourself; your self-esteem and happiness should come before anyone else?s opinion or desire. You are responsible for making yourself happy. While it is important to remember this, you shouldn?t step on other people. If you remain true to yourself while honoring your personal code of ethics, you will be better prepared to develop yourself more fully.

TIP! You can?t tend to others needs until your own needs are met. Wherever you are mentally and emotionally, always take time to relax and check in with your needs.

Always work towards your personal best. If you are passionate enough, you can become truly great. It?s not often that we can take the top spot at something, but we can at least drive ourselves to inspire others. Increase your professional skillset, and you will feel a lot better about yourself.

TIP! Live according to your principles. Your personality is strongly shaped and supported by these principles.

Unless you are willing to work towards your personal goals, you will never be able to grow as a person. If you want to become a better person, you have to take concrete steps to make it happen.

TIP! Always have an emergency fund. An emergency fund will deter you from putting any charges on your credit card.

The goals you set out for your self improvement program need to be measurable and specific. Having a specific end result to work towards gives you more precise ways to get to the goal, and gives you a better chance at success. Doing so will allow you to realize success more quickly and meet all challenges.

TIP! Remaining humble will always benefit you. In the grand scheme of things, our lives are relatively insignificant.

Work to control your anger by counting to ten before speaking. Breathe deeply and, as you count, try thinking peaceful thoughts. Avoid saying anything that could be mean, and try to stay calm.

TIP! Try to get more organized. If you are able to get your life organized and keep it that way, you will see a real boost to your self-confidence.

Plenty of employers are more concerned with the fact that you have a degree, rather than what school you attended. Working with large financial institutions or law firms is an exception to this rule. In the end, the important thing is to have a degree, any degree, to open the doors of opportunity for you.

TIP! Building a better you starts with building leadership tendencies. The best definition for leadership is ?influence?.

By writing down your goals, you can aid your self improvement. If you are trying to become more confident, write that down. The next step is to brainstorm what you can do, or have done, to work on your confidence. Then, put yourself in situations where that can happen. By tackling it methodically, you will have a much higher chance for succeeding.

TIP! Are you causing yourself unnecessary stress? Dealing with your stress in a healthy, constructive manner will improve your overall mental wellbeing. Even if it?s a mistake, you can always live through it or fix it.

You must have a positive attitude in order to grow as an individual. Living your life with a poor attitude will only attract more of the same to your life. It?s better to remain optimistic, and to remember that this attitude will make it easier for you to successfully attain your goals in life.

TIP! When engaging in personal development, tell yourself that you want to be better because you deserve better. Believe that you should do the best for yourself.

If you want to get more from your self improvement then take care of your physical self. A good diet, a lot of sleep and activity will give you more energy and help you get a healthier and better-looking body. Although this is simple advice, it is perhaps one of the hardest things that we can master.

TIP! Learn to care for others for a shift in your own personal growth. There are times when you may have to sacrifice something and simply care for someone else.

This article offers information on how you can better you personality, mental outlook and character to live a happier life. Use the tips from this article to help yourself work on your self improvement, and you will be on your way to enjoying a new life.

Kappa is different from other electricity providers, because it does not eager to establish the independent electricity provider platform. Why Kappa's independent electric business platform will be established so late. It can be accounted that Kappa is on the continuous exploration road of the trail-and-error of the electric business. Without clearly thinking the role that the independent platform ought to play in the entire business of Kappa, Kappa is not going to easily launch the electric business platform. Gu Haolan introduced, I Kappa will have these three important missions below. Its primary task is to show Kappa's new products, and then play a role in promoting the whole Kappa brand to upgrade.
There will be lots of changes in products of Kappa. Kappa products have been quickly recognized by the market, since Kappa put forward the "sports, fashion, sexy and taste" these four words product maxim in 2004. With the time development; however, some concepts are going to make a difference. The timelessness of "fashion" is stronger, so it is a concept that is hard to grasp. Kappa set its foot in the electric business in 2009, and then it kept on thinking ho could its own brand be promoted. Consequently, its products can make an impression to people. Secondly, I Kappa focuses on stressing the matching philosophy of clothes.
As for shopping, at present, the domestic consumers have reached to a more mature stage. They are not going to be seized with a sudden impulse to purchase due to some factors, such as the color and the style. They will consider more on how to match with the existing clothes, how to reflect their own temperaments and other things. Under normal circumstances, modern fashion magazines will have some content on how to match clothes. But these magazines are not convenient to acquire, and some only list some simple principle. The mission of how to match clothes will be showed to people by I Kappa when appears online.
It will take Kappa products as an example, and visually talk about some common sense and philosophy of clothes matching. Not just the matching in general senses is included. You are going to learn how to match trousers with coats. Furthermore, diversity will be pursued more by it, for example, the mixed collocation, cascading collocation, color collocation as well as the small ornaments makeup. Consumers; what is more, can go shopping conveniently through I Kappa. Consumers will be more likely to have the desire and impulse to go shopping because of the store design the lighting beautification as well as the shopping guides' existence.

Political Yard Signs: When Your HOA Can Tell ... - AOL Real Estate

HOAs and political yard signs

By Dona DeZube

Ah, November! The month when Americans put up political yard signs hoping to sway their neighbors' votes -- until the community association tells them to get those signs out of the yards.

If you're one of the more than 60 million Americans -- about 1 in 5 U.S. residents -- who live in a homeowners association, condominium community, cooperative or other planned community, you might not have the right to use your yard to proclaim your political views to passersby.

The homeowners associations that limit or even ban political signs aren't trying to restrict your First Amendment rights. They just think it's more important to have a tidy-looking street than to know which candidates the neighbors prefer.

My neighbors down the street, who have nine yard signs, would clearly disagree with any limits. Their front yard features three signs from each of three candidates.

State law also comes into play in this issue. Some states prohibit community associations from restricting political signs. Others say HOAs have to allow signs, but can restrict them (for example, saying you can put up a sign 45 days before and seven days after an election and it can't be bigger than 2 feet by 2 feet), says Frank Rathburn, spokesperson for the Community Associations Institute.

In states without rules on political signs, homeowners associations can do what they want without breaking state laws, but there might be local laws they must follow, Rathburn says.

I think the reasonable restriction route is the way to go. I wouldn't like it if my yard-sign-loving neighbors put up three of those billboard-size signs for a bunch of candidates and then left the signs up for months. I especially wouldn't like it if I were trying to sell my home.

I'm sympathetic to those who disagree with me, though. So if you want to fight to keep your lawn sign without restriction, try these tips:

1. Read your association's governing documents to see what they say about signs.

2. If the HOA rules say you can't have a sign, check your state law by doing a Google search using "political signs [state name]" or "rules for yard signs [state name]." Your state may prohibit the community association from messing with your sign.

3. If there's no state protection, check to see if your city, county or other local jurisdiction has laws about yard signs. The First Amendment Center follows recent cases on yard signs, so you can check there, too.

4. If the HOA rules prohibit yard signs and there aren't any state or local laws protecting your sign, take it down for now. You've agreed to live in the association and follow its rules, even rules you don't like. Then, try these next tips to change the rules.

5. Go to a board meeting and ask the board to allow political signs on a limited basis next year. Resist the urge to call the board "First Amendment haters."

6. If the board refuses your request, shore up your friends and supporters and run for the board on a First Amendment slate. You can work to change the rules when you're in charge.

7. Willing to kiss a big bunch of cash goodbye? Hire an attorney to file suit to make the community association change the rule. If you have no cash to spare, talk to a free speech advocacy group such as your local ACLU.

8. Write your state legislator to suggest passage of a yard sign protection law. Given that they're the recipients of all the yard sign glory, you might find an ally for your cause.

Oh, and once you get to put up signs, don't forget to recycle them.
