Denon Urban Raver AH-C300 In-Ear Headphones

For Denon, the respected manufacturer of headphones and stereo components, the concept of intentionally bass-heavy earphones is relatively new territory. Thus, we'll forgive the company for the Urban Raver AH-C300 In-Ear Headphones' somewhat ridiculous name, and its head-scratching product descriptions. ("Bone-jarring" and "brutally powerful" are two phrases that should never describe anything I'm about to put in my ears.) Thankfully, it's only the marketing that's brutal?like most Denon products, the Urban Raver ($$249.99 direct)??is a solid pair of earphones. It does indeed produce tremendous bass, so purists can probably stop reading now, but for bass lovers it's a treat, and it comes with enough accessories and innovative features, like on-ear phone controls, to take the sting out of the slightly inflated price.

Design
Luckily the Urban Raver doesn't look as ridiculous as its name would suggest, and the Denon logo is the only thing you'll find emblazoned on the earphones. It's easy to imagine the black and metallic pair sitting alongside recent visually pleasing, classy designs like the Bowers & Wilkins C5 In-Ear Headphones ?or the Bose IE2 , both of which feature ear-stabilizers similar to the Urban Raver's. The earpieces are undeniably bulky, but they're lightweight, and provide a secure fit. However, over time, the fit can become a bit uncomfortable, and it's worth noting that the larger earpieces tend to push the cables against your jaw or cheek?a minor annoyance.

Denon throws in six pairs of silicon ear tips of various sizes, a pair of Comply foam eartips, and three total pairs of stabilizers in various sizes to ensure a secure fit. Also included with the earphones: a ?-inch adapter for larger headphone jacks, a detachable carabiner (a puzzling but harmless inclusion), and one of the sturdier, well-designed zip-up protective pouches we've seen.

The Urban Raver benefits from two notable design choices?a double-coated, tangle-free cable, and phone controls built into the right earpiece rather than the audio cable, which is the standard placement. This makes the cable less bulky (although this is presumably why the earpieces are?more?bulky), while Volume, Playback, Track Navigation, and Phone Calls are all handled by a click wheel that blends seamlessly with the overall design. Using it is simple and straightforward, and call clarity with the microphone, also built in to the right earpiece, is on par with the competition.Denon Urban Raver AH-C300 kit

Denon also offers a free app for iOS and Android users called Denon Club. Like most apps from audio manufacturers, it is mostly unnecessary, as the menus for music on iPhones and Android devices are already pretty straightforward, but it includes an EQ adjuster and access to local radio streams.

Performance
Denon makes no bones about what the Urban Raver is here to accomplish: BIG bass. The rationale is that modern mixes tend to have more low-end presence, with some sub-bass frequencies that are all but ignored by many high-end manufacturers. The company took a page out of the Monster Beats by Dr. Dre ?playbook and added gobs of low frequency response to the equation. Fortunately, the Urban Raver provides ample clarity in the bass realm, as well, so things are never muddy, while the mids and highs are crisp and articulate?indicative of a more typical, less bass-heavy pair from Denon.

On tracks like the Knife's "Silent Shout," the deep bass electronic drum hits have serious presence, and even at maximum volume, there is no distortion?not that anyone should be listening at levels that high. Other challenging, bass-heavy and resonant tracks, like Thom Yorke's "Cymbal Rush," are presented clearly and cleanly with a serious low frequency push. It's safe to say that if you love electronic music, hip hop, or modern pop with deep bass in the mix, the Urban Raver will not disappoint.

If you favor a flat response pair, look elsewhere. On classical tracks, like the John Adams' piece, "The Chairman Dances," the lower register strings sound like they're playing through a subwoofer. A finely-tuned subwoofer with nice clarity, I should add, but a sub nonetheless. The brass and wood percussion may sound bright and clear, as well, but this is far from the balanced pair that most classical or jazz lovers?or purists?would pick out. If that's what you're looking for, start by checking out the review of the Etymotic ER-4PT .

But if you love bass, you deserve a pair that can deliver it, cleanly and intensely. Perhaps you don't want the bass to be "bone-jarring," which just sounds painful, but you want the added boost that a powerful subwoofer brings to the mix. The Urban Raver delivers this quite well, with a little more clarity than other bass-heavy pairs like the Monster iSport Immersion In-Ear Headphones. Throw in the excellent carrying case, the cool tangle-resistant cable, the on-ear controls, and the plethora of ear-fitting accessories, and it's easy to forget the name. The $250 price, on the other hand, seems a bit high for a pair of earphones that contorts the balance of the mix so drastically, but the aforementioned accessories make it all a bit easier to accept.

Mechanism provides clues for research into pancreatic diabetes

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? Mice develop pancreatic diabetes (type 3c) when they lack certain genes in the E2F group, and to understand how this happens, Olatz Zenarruzabeitia has focussed on the molecular mechanism behind it. This researcher works at the laboratory of Ana Zubiaga, Professor of Genetics of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU); this was where an article that appeared in the journal Nature in 2010 on this line of research was published.

The keys in this process have now been described, and using them as a basis it has been possible to prevent mice lacking these E2F genes from developing pancreatic diabetes. In fact, 8 or 9 % of the diabetes suffered by humans belongs to this type, and so this mechanism could be used as a model in the long term for creating therapies. Zenarruzabeitia has defended her thesis dealing with these results under the title Mecanismos moleculares implicados en la homeostasis tisular: papel del eje E2F-p53 (Molecular mechanisms involved in tissue homeostasis: role of the E2F-p53 axis).

The E2F1 and E2F2 genes (belonging to the E2F group) play key roles in tissue homeostasis; or, to put it another way, in properly maintaining organs. They regulate cell proliferation which is indispensable for preventing alterations in homeostasis. As Zenarruzabeitia explains, in the specific case of pancreatic homeostasis, the damage caused by the lack of activity of or presence of these two factors is already known: "A few years ago we removed E2F1 and E2F2 from mice, and we saw that this led to pancreatic atrophy, the development of diabetes and premature death. In the current work, we have gone further into the molecular mechanism that explains this."

Not enough E2F, too much p53

When E2F1 and E2F2 are missing, the DNA replicates more than it should. Zenarruzabeitia has described the mechanism in depth; she has observed that this over-replication damages the DNA and the p53 gene pathway is activated; in other words, causing it to express itself more. That is the crux of the matter, since this gene leads to programmed cell death (apoptosis), and the appearance of alterations here is very damaging. As the researcher explains, in this case, "p53 is more active, which leads to the overexpression of the proteins involved in apoptosis. That is when pancreatic atrophy followed by diabetes occurs." So the lack of E2F1 and E2F2 combined with the gene p53 has much to do with the development of pancreatic diabetes, as confirmed in mice.

In this respect, Zenarruzabeitia has sought a model to prevent pancreatic diabetes appearing by also removing p53 from the mice already lacking E2F1 and E2F2: "We crossed mice that did not have E2F1 or E2F2 with others lacking p53, and that way we obtained mice that did not have any of the three. We saw that as they did not have p53, the pathway could not be activated. So there was no pancreatic atrophy and they didn't develop diabetes, either."

Despite having described the molecular mechanism only for the case of the pancreas, the results obtained also affect other organs. In fact, apoptosis is not restricted to the pancreas of mice lacking E2F1 and E2F2: "For example, they also suffer damage to the salivary gland and the testicles, and when p53 is de-activated, these organs also recover. We have seen that the atrophy recedes, since the weight and histology of the organ recover."

The description produced with respect to this mechanism in mice may also be of use in researching the same thing in humans. What is more, as Zenarruzabeitia points out, more and more cases of human diabetes (8-9 %) are linked to the loss in pancreatic mass, in other words, to type 3c diabetes. "The mechanism is not known; it is possible that what we have described in mice also occurs in humans. It could be a good model to go on studying this type of diabetes, which is seen more and more in humans." This model could be used to implement research that could help to gain a better understanding not only of 3c diabetes itself, but also of the disorders linked to pancreatic degeneration, so that, in the long term, the possibility of designing therapies based on E2F factor biology could come about.

Madonna to US fans: Appreciate your freedom

(AP) ? As she kicked off the U.S. leg of her "MDNA Tour" in Philadelphia, Madonna said she was happy to party in the USA after touring Europe for three months.

The pop icon told the crowd Tuesday night they should "never forget how lucky you are to live where you live and to have the freedom that you have." She made the comments after talking about the arrest of three members of the punk-rock female band Pussy Riot. The women were sentenced to two years in prison after performing a "punk prayer" at Moscow's Christ the Savior cathedral in which they called on the Virgin Mary to deliver Russia from its leader, Vladimir Putin.

"In my travels around the world the one thing I truly witnessed is we in America have freedom of speech, freedom of expression," the singer said.

Madonna, who toured most of Europe from June to August, has called for the Pussy Riot members to be freed. Paul McCartney and Peter Gabriel also have spoken in the women's favor.

"I don't think that it's a coincidence that I'm in the city where the Declaration of Independence was signed," Madonna said at the Wells Fargo Center to nearly 20,000 fans. "We are in the land of democracy."

Russian activists recently sued Madonna for millions of dollars, claiming they were offended by her support for gay rights during her show in St. Petersburg. A law passed in February makes it illegal to promote homosexuality to minors, and the author of that law has pointed to the presence of children as young as 12 at Madonna's concert on Aug. 9. (Minors also attended Madonna's U.S. show.)

When speaking about Pussy Riot, Madonna said that about 80 gay men were jailed in St. Petersburg because of their sexual orientation. She told the crowd that the arrests were unfair, and they booed in her support.

Then the 53-year-old told the U.S. audience: "Don't get fat and lazy and take that freedom for granted."

Madonna kicked off her concert late on Tuesday, apologizing to the crowd, who began to boo before she hit the stage around 10:30 p.m. EST.

"We had many changes to make from Europe to America, and I wanted the show to be perfect for you because my fans deserve it and quite frankly I deserve it," she said.

She performed for nearly two hours, starting in a skin-tight black ensemble with a gun in hand as she sang the song "Girls Gone Wild" from her latest album "MDNA." She transitioned to "Revolver," as she and her background dancers held guns and bullets appeared on the backdrop. (Madonna posted on her website that she does not condone violence or the use of guns and she's using fake guns in concert as a metaphor for strength.) During the next song ? "Gang Bang" ? she shot a man and spat what appeared to be liquor in his face, while blood spats and bloody hands appeared on the screen.

The dark mood escaped as Madonna changed into a red and white marching band get-up, singing "Express Yourself" and "Give Me All Your Luvin'" as a marching band played to the crowd. She sang some of Lady Gaga's "Born This Way," pulling up her skirt to reveal her red shorts.

Madonna's performances of "Celebration" and "I'm Addicted" were also colorful, as laser lights beamed and the venue became nightclub-like. Madonna's best vocal performance, though, was during "Like a Prayer," which featured more than 30 back-up singers in robes. She got the best response from the crowd when she performed "Vogue," as the dancers and Madonna ? now in a corset, long gloves and her hair pulled back ? strutted in black and white onstage.

She got racy during "Like a Virgin" and "Human Nature," taking off her shirt to reveal her bra, and pulling down her pants to reveal her thong (she wore fishnet stockings).

"Sometimes it's easier to show your (butt) than show your feelings. Maybe tonight we can all live dangerously," said Madonna, who had the words "No Fear" on her back.

Aspiring to Creativity: Family Christmas Folio - Scrapbook Parade ...

I'm so excited about this project! This 12 x 12 folio will hold your Christmas cards, gift tags, photos, journaling, year in review, and a 10" x 8" family portrait, invitations, concert programs, plus anything else you can think of to keep from your Christmas celebrations. You can have it standing as part of your Christmas decor and add to it daily throughout out the season.

For the project we are using Teresa Collins Christmas Cottage collection with matching Washi Tape.

The idea for this project originated with Katy Orta (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JxJ94cPdj-M) I'm not sure how she made it but I made calculations on how to construct it while making a few changes in the design. I made it much thicker to hold more pockets and tags; I made all three of the lower pockets 1/8" deep to hold bulkier or bunches of things, like smaller cards or gift tags; I added 12 additional pockets with tabs, 6 on each side in the side bindings.

What I love about this project is that you can stand it up and have it on display throughout the Christmas season as you add the programs to special Christmas concerts you attend, or invitations to festive parties, or add your Christmas portraits and photos to, add your Christmas cards to, the gift tags, notes and journaling through of year. There are probably even more ideas for this Family Christmas Folio.

Here is what it looks like standing up.

I forgot to add the three hanging ornaments at the bottom of the large framed mat in the center! I'll have to add another photo when I get it back.
The lower right corner displays the year, which I cut from cardstock using my Cricut. The shepherds and lamb are a laser cut chipboard that we carry at Scrapbook Parade. We have the choice of snowflakes, trees, Santa's sleigh, and angels should anyone not wish to have the shepherds.

Here is a closeup of the bow and embellishments.

I love the concept of this project and think it would be great to make this again as a wedding folio. My oldest son is getting married in October, so this may make a great gift. I'll have to make time to make one for the two of them.

I have a YouTube video for you to view where I describe more details for you. It's my first video. In the past I've taken tons of photos and created slide shows. So I hope the video is a good one for this project. If you have some helpful tips, please let me know in the comments.

Thank you so much for stopping by for a look at this fun project. Happy crafting everyone!

14k emerald diamond ring, pearl rings with sapphires

Having different types of jewelry is always fun to have because you?ll almost never have to wear the same thing twice. And though I am a hardcore diamond person at heart, it can be a little monotonous at times. I love classic, evergreen pieces, but sometimes you need to add a bit of color to the diamond to make it more interesting.

Now the beauty of diamonds is that they are like your LBD. They never go out of style and can be paired with almost anything. For instance, you can opt for a 14k emerald diamond ring, which is both affordable and stylish. Green is one of my favorite colors and goes well with my wardrobe, but you can always pick gemstones that you adore or even as per your birth sign.

I go this heart shaped diamond and gold ring recently, which I simply hate to take off. I can wear this to work, for formal occasions and almost anywhere. You can also opt for multiple stones with it, so when you get bored, you can always opt for another color and voila, a new ring is instantly ready!

When you don?t feel like wearing green, opt for pearl rings with sapphires. Pearls are also timeless pieces that look wow with diamonds. Of course, with another stone embedded, you get a beautiful blend of colors. Check out this sterling silver freshwater cultured pearl and sapphire ring.

This radiant ring features a freshwater cultured pearl and round-cut sapphire stones that illuminate the sterling silver ring. You can pair this ring with a new pendant for a perfectly polished look. It is a very handy piece to gift someone too.

And I think both sapphire and emeralds can be worn together, if you have the right dress or accessories to complement both colors! As a rule of thumb, do sport them in different hands though to avoid overdoing the look.

Making Smart Drink Choices | Happy Food, Healthy Life

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Alright friends, so it?s Friday. Just hours from the start of your weekend. Or maybe your weekend has already begun. Either way, one of my favorite ways to wind down from a stressful week is with an ice cold beverage?of some sort.

Let me tell what drinking used to look like for me back in my younger years (which were also my disordered eating years). I would wake up Friday or Saturday morning and start figuring out what was going on for the evening festivities. As soon as I realized there would be alcoholic consumption involved, I would automatically get in the mindset of ??no more food for this girl!? You and I both know how quickly alcohol calories can add up. If you aren?t careful, before you know it, you can rack up your daily recommended intake just in drinks for the night. And you wonder where your freshman 15 came from?

Well let me give you a few tips that allow you to still have a drink or two without feeling like you can?t eat all day. If a beverage is something you care to partake of, you should be able to enjoy it without feeling guilty.

source: original artwork

  • Drink wine. It?s lower in calories.
  • Drink liquor. By itself. It?s low in calories.
  • If you can?t do without your mixed drinks, consider diet tonic, sodas, juices, etc. WebMD offers?this list of low-calorie mixers.
  • If diet mixers aren?t an option, most martinis are low on calories (apart from the obvious, like chocolate martinis)
  • Gin and tonic is not bad (around 200 calories), but the tonic can add up fast.
  • Light beer is healthier than your favorite pale ale. Shocker!
  • If you want to compare your favorite drinks, head over to web site?Get Drunk Not Fat.
  • Once you have more than two drinks, you?re already in ?unhealthy? territory. If it?s a simple social gathering and not a wild night out, the healthiest thing will be to cut yourself off after a couple.
  • Try switching between alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks throughout the night. Sparkling water with a squeeze of citrus can be refreshing, and it has the added benefit of not looking like a buzz kill.

One of my favorite tricks for keeping calories low is Crystal Light drink mixes. Yup, those little calorie-free packets of flavorful powder that you pour in water. You just whip up a glass of that and add your favorite liquor. Rum, whiskey, and vodka are the best with the mixes, in my opinion. That way, you are only taking in the calories from the liquor, and not the mixers. Mixers are where you will generally see the calories add up, but not in this case.

Now, I am no way saying that drinking is necessarily?healthy so don?t get me all twisted up here. But I am an advocate of enjoying the things that you love, and for me and many others, a glass or two is something I enjoy. No longer are the days where I have to starve myself in order to enjoy a cold Becks beer.

Besides, the hangovers were pretty darn horrid without any food to soak up the alcohol. Not a game I would suggest to anyone!

Summer is, sadly, almost over. Enjoy the weekend. Crack up a cold one and take it all in!

Wondering where to go from here?

Pakistan: US drones hit militant hideouts, kill 18

ISLAMABAD (AP) ? U.S. drones fired missiles at three hideouts in a key militant sanctuary close to the Afghan border Friday, killing 18 suspected insurgents in the latest of a series of strikes conducted this week despite protests from Islamabad, Pakistani intelligence officials said.

The strikes all took place in the North Waziristan tribal area, the target of a planned Pakistani military operation that the U.S. expects in the near future. Hundreds of militants and their family members have streamed out of North Waziristan in the past few days in anticipation of the operation, local residents said.

Washington has long demanded Pakistan target militants holed up in North Waziristan and has welcomed the planned operation in the area. But Islamabad is likely to focus on Taliban militants who have been at war with Pakistan, not those who have been fighting the U.S.-led coalition in neighboring Afghanistan.

In a string of strikes Friday just minutes apart, U.S. missiles slammed into mud brick compounds located several kilometers (miles) from each other in the Shawal Valley, a heavily forested, mountainous area in North Waziristan that serves as one of the key crossing points for militants heading into Afghanistan, Pakistani intelligence officials said.

Eighteen suspected militants were killed and another 14 were wounded, the officials said on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media. It was not immediately clear which militant group was hit.

The U.S. has carried out seven drone strikes in the past week in North Waziristan, ignoring repeated Pakistani protests that they violate the country's sovereignty and international law. The covert CIA attacks have increasingly become a point of public conflict between the two countries, complicating an already troubled relationship that is vital to the outcome of war in neighboring Afghanistan.

Pakistan's Foreign Ministry summoned a senior U.S. diplomat Thursday to protest the strikes, and the ministry's spokesman, Moazzam Ahmad Khan, called the attacks "illegal, unproductive" during his weekly press briefing Friday.

But the reality behind the scenes is more nuanced ? Pakistan secretly supported the strikes in the past, and U.S. officials say privately that key members of the government and military still do.

They Americans view the public denunciations of the strikes as a political tool to appease the large number of Pakistanis who disapprove of the missile attacks, and insist they have no intention of holstering a key weapon in the fight against Taliban and al-Qaida militants who threaten the West.

Pakistani officials have asked the U.S. to feed intelligence gathered by drones to Pakistani jets and ground forces so they can target the militants. But American officials say Pakistan has proved incapable or unwilling to target militants the U.S considers dangerous.

Last Saturday, a U.S. drone struck a militant hideout in North Waziristan, killing five allies of a powerful warlord, Hafiz Gul Bahadur, whose forces often attack U.S. troops in Afghanistan. American drones fired a flurry of missiles into the area Sunday, killing 10 suspected militants in two separate strikes. On Tuesday, missiles targeting a vehicle in North Waziristan killed five more suspected militants.

One of the reasons President Barack Obama increased the number of drone attacks in Pakistan when he took office in 2009 was the government's refusal to launch an offensive in North Waziristan against militants who carry out cross-border attacks against American forces in Afghanistan.

U.S. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta recently said Islamabad plans to launch an operation in North Waziristan in the near future targeting the Pakistani Taliban, who have waged a bloody insurgency against the government in Islamabad for years.

Pakistani military officials have said they will slowly increase pressure on the militants in North Waziristan, rather than conduct a sweeping offensive in the area. North Waziristan is the only area in Pakistan's tribal region where the military has not conducted an offensive.

Analysts have said they doubt Pakistan will target militants in North Waziristan responsible for attacks in Afghanistan because they are not seen as much of a threat to the state. Also, Pakistan has historical links with some of the Afghan militants operating in the area, especially the so-called Haqqani network, and many analysts believe Islamabad sees them as key potential allies in Afghanistan after foreign forces withdraw.

Many of the militants who started fleeing North Waziristan in vehicles on Thursday were from Central Asian countries like Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan, local residents said on condition of anonymity out of fear for their safety. They also included some Arabs and fighters from Chechnya. Many foreign fighters in North Waziristan are closely allied with the Pakistani Taliban.

Pakistani Taliban militants were seen patrolling the area, but did not seem to be fleeing. Some local tribesmen were looking for homes outside of North Waziristan to which they could flee, but did not seem overly concerned about reports of an upcoming military operation.

By Friday, around 1,000 people, including wives and children of the foreign militants, had fled from four villages surrounding Mir Ali, one of the main towns in North Waziristan and a key sanctuary for militants fighting in Pakistan, said local residents. It appeared the militants would either head across the border to Afghanistan or to the neighboring South Waziristan tribal area.

The Pakistani army conducted a major offensive against the Pakistani Taliban in South Waziristan in 2009, but many militants simply fled and others still operate freely in certain areas.

Imtiaz Gul, director of the Islamabad-based Center for Research and Security Studies, said reports of an operation in North Waziristan would also give militants time to flee rather than face the army.

"They won't wait for the rockets to fall or the troops to capture them," said Gul.

NASA's Curiosity rover to go for first drive Weds.

Engineers successfully tested the rover's steering abilities on Monday, and now they're ready to turn its six wheels for the first time since Curiosity landed on Mars on Aug. 5, officials announced today.

This still from a set of images shows the movement of the front left wheel of NASA's Curiosity as rover drivers turned the wheels in place at the landing site on Mars. Engineers wiggled the wheels as a test of the rover's steering and anticipate embarking on Curiosity's first drive in the next couple of days. This image was taken by one of Curiosity's Navigation cameras on Aug. 21.

After more than two weeks of sitting still, NASA's Mars rover Curiosity is finally set to roll out on the Red Planet with its debut drive on Wednesday (Aug. 22).

Engineers successfully tested the rover's steering abilities yesterday (Aug. 20), and now they're ready to turn its six wheels for the first time since?Curiosity landed on Mars?on Aug. 5, officials announced today.

"Everything's in fine shape, and that means we are 'go' for our first test drive tomorrow," Curiosity mission manager Mike Watkins, of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, Calif., told reporters today.

Curiosity's first drive on Mars?will be a short one. The rover will move about 10 feet (3 meters) forward, turn in place to the right, and then back up a few meters. The whole operation should take the rover about 30 minutes, Watkins said. [Latest Mars Photos by Curiosity Rover]

Taking it slow

The 1-ton?Curiosity rover?is the heart of NASA's Mars Science Laboratory mission (MSL), which seeks to determine if the Red Planet could ever have hosted microbial life. The rover is exploring a huge crater called Gale that's about 96 miles wide?(154 kilometers) .

Curiosity's main target is the base of?Mount Sharp, the 3.4-mile-high (5.5 km) mountain rising from Gale Crater's center. Mount Sharp's foothills appear to bear clays and sulfates, suggesting the area was exposed to liquid water long ago.

But the rover's first big set of drives will take it away from its ultimate destination, toward a spot mission scientists have dubbed Glenelg. Glenelg, which is about 1,300 feet (400 m) from Curiosity's landing site, hosts three different geological formations that mission scientists are eager to investigate.

If all goes well with tomorrow's driving test and a few other checkouts, Watkins said, Curiosity could start heading for Glenelg around Sol 20 or so ? mission lingo for its 20th full day on?Mars. That corresponds roughly to Saturday (Aug. 25), since Sol 16 begins this evening.

The mission team eventually wants Curiosity to cover about 330 feet (100 m) or more of Martian ground in a big driving day, but that probably won't happen for a while.

"It's going to take us a little while to get up to that rate," Watkins said. "This first set of drives ? not just the test drive tomorrow but actually the drive to Glenelg ? we'll probably do that in pretty small chunks, just to evaluate, you know, what's going on and take a look at the processing algorithms. My guess is that those are going to go in 10- to 20-meter chunks."

In good shape

Researchers have been checking out Curiosity and its 10 science instruments since the rover landed, ensuring that it's ready for its two-year surface mission.

By and large, the checkouts have been going extremely well, team members have said. On Sunday (Aug. 19), for example, engineers deployed Curiosity's 7-foot-long (2.1 m) robotic arm for the first time and did motor checks on its many tools, which include a percussive drill and soil-scooping gear.

"All of that went successfully as well," Watkins said.

And on Friday (Aug. 17), Curiosity used its Dynamic Albedo of Neutrons (DAN) instrument for the first time on Mars. DAN measures the amount of hydrogen ? an indicator of water ? in the Martian soil by peppering the ground with neutrons and then observing the extent to which they scatter back.

Curiosity's ChemCam instrument ? which fires a laser at rocks and then determines their composition by analyzing the vaporized bits ? also?got its first workout?over the weekend. It's performing even better than anticipated, researchers said.

Curiosity's onboard weather station, which is called REMS (short for Rover Environmental Monitoring Station), has been switched on. From Aug. 16 to Aug. 17, it measured ground temperatures as high as 37 degrees Fahrenheit (3 degrees Celsius) and as low as minus 131.8 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 91 degrees Celsius).

However, REMS is not working perfectly on the Martian surface. Wind sensors on one of the instruments' two booms have been damaged, perhaps by rocks deposited on Curiosity's deck during or shortly after landing, researchers said.

But wind sensors on the other boom are working fine, so the team doesn't anticipate too much of an impact.

"We still retain nearly the full capability, just with a little bit of ambiguity in terms of wind direction," said MSL deputy project scientist Ashwin Vasavada of JPL.

How To Make Certain Your Online Marketing Business Survives The ...

Google has got the best of motives with its Panda update. The goal of the Panda update was to rid searches of all of those spammy content websites that had started to take control of the searches people were performing. You know how sometimes you do a search for information and find the same badly written article through seven different sites? The aim of Google Panda is to end it. It wants people to be sure that the results they are given through searching are highly pertinent and not just someone who is trying to trick the system into yielding more advertising revenue.

Yes, this is great in theory, but as an Internet Marketer it is natural to be concerned about all of the significant changes that are happening in the market due to it. Places such as HubPages and Ezine Articles have been hit especially hard, which might have been where lots of your website traffic was coming from. That doesn?t mean, though, that you are certain to become a failure. In fact, now the website traffic you receive is going to be a lot more highly targeted and interested in what it is you?re selling. Obviously, this is determined by your ability to work with the system.

So how would you do this?

Stop keyword stuffing your site content. It?s good to focus on a keyword or two but you shouldn?t try to smash them into your web site content in places where they do not fit. This is one of the more important rules in web site content writing?especially now. Panda has made Google spiders smarter than they have ever been. These bots will know when a keyword is naturally used and when it is being overused.

Update your site often. Posting an article is a very good way to do this. It can be by means of a blog that sees updates regularly. It can be because you happen to be constantly improving your content. No matter which method you choose, update frequently so that Google crawls your website often. Ever since its Panda update, Google values active websites more than they ever have previously. If you let too much time to go between your updates, you are going to fall in the search rankings.

Your content should be completely unique. You shouldn?t use reconstituted PLR content. Do not use articles you found in open source article sources to sub in for content. Google Panda punishes you very severely for duplicate content ? even if it just seems duplicated. The publishing of used content is an extremely good way to make sure that Google?s bots and spiders never crawl your website. That will never be great for your bottom line, will it?

Work as hard as you?re able to to give and earn high quality links both outwardly and inwardly. Your best bet is to actually earn back links from web sites which have the best reputations possible. Making use of directories and traffic funnels is not going to help you fake your reputation with Google any longer. They are going to investigate source of the link to be sure that it is legit. So get to work earning your inbound links.

There are plenty of things you could do to make certain your website and business are Panda compliant. Most of them are little more than common sense. Imagine what you really are trying to find when you do a search and be sure you do the same with your website. If you do this, you?ll be completely ok.

If you are browsing for high pagerank backlinks and even on high quality article writing service then head to my website to understand more about this.

No evidence that drug used for preventing life-threatening bleeding in women during labor works

No evidence that drug used for preventing life-threatening bleeding in women during labor works

Monday, August 20, 2012

There is insufficient evidence for the effectiveness of a drug that is being used increasingly to prevent life-threatening bleeding in women after giving birth in community settings in low income countries, according to a review of all the available research published today (Monday) in the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine. [1]

Misoprostol (brand name Cytotec) was originally developed for treating gastric ulcers, but is increasingly used in low- and middle-income countries for preventing postpartum haemorrhage (PPH). It is given to women during labour to prevent uncontrolled bleeding, and it is included on the World Health Organisation's Essential Medicines List for this use.

However, researchers led by Professor Allyson Pollock from the Centre for Primary Care and Public Health at Queen Mary, University of London (UK) identified 172 studies on the use of misoprostol during labour and found that only six had enough information to enable them to review whether or not the drug was effective in preventing PPH in rural and community settings in low income countries. The six studies failed to provide sufficient evidence that the drug worked and most had problems with study design and the fact the findings were not applicable generally.

"Current evidence to support the use of misoprostol in home or community settings in low- and middle-income countries for the prevention of postpartum haemorrhage is, at best, inconclusive," said Professor Pollock.

"Yet, despite there being no proper evidence of benefit, the WHO and some countries have put it on the Essential Medicine Lists and the drug is being pushed hard by networks of global public-private partnerships and industry in low- and middle-income countries. Countries such as Nepal, India and Uganda are promoting and using it. We urge the WHO to urgently review its decision to put misoprostol on its Essential Medicines List."

According to WHO estimates, there were 342,900 deaths related to pregnancy and childbirth in 2008, most of them occurring in developing countries. A quarter of these are thought to be associated with PPH while giving birth.

The main risk factor for PPH is anaemia, which is easily treated if it is diagnosed. But without antenatal screening for the condition it is impossible to identify women who may have developed it and who are at increased risk of life-threatening bleeding during labour.

"The most effective preventive strategy for PPH is prevention of anaemia, good antenatal care including good hygiene and sanitation and good care during labour," said Professor Pollock. "Developed countries would not dream of giving women misoprostol during labour on the basis of the current evidence, yet industry and health practitioners are pushing it hard in developing countries."

One of the reasons that misoprostol is popular in developing countries is that it is a fairly stable drug that doesn't degrade if not kept in cold storage conditions, and which does not have to be given intravenously. For this reason, it is more likely to be used outside hospitals, in settings such as the home and local community when women go into labour.

"Countries should be concentrating on improving their primary care facilities, rather than thinking there is a pill to prevent every ill," said Professor Pollock. "Misoprostol is being used inappropriately at present, and the money being spent on purchasing the drug would be better spent elsewhere, for instance, in ensuring there are skilled attendants during delivery and adequate antenatal services that can detect and help to prevent complications."

Mali forms new caretaker government

BAMAKO (Reuters) - Mali's interim president Dioncounda Traore approved a new transitional government on Monday, to move the West African country closer to constitutional order after a military coup in March.

The 31-member government will replace a transitional authority that was crippled by political infighting, and failed make progress in setting elections.

"The president of the republic, after receiving proposals from the prime minister, decrees the list of members of government," said a presidential statement read over state radio.

The statement said the holders of five posts in the new transitional government had been chosen by the military leadership. It said at least four members of the previous transitional authority, including the interior minister charged with organizing elections, remained unchanged.

Once considered a democratic success story in a long-troubled region, Mali has been split in two since a March 22 coup paved the way for a military advance by northern separatists and al Qaeda-linked Islamists.

West African regional bloc ECOWAS, which is pushing for the deployment of a 3,000-strong intervention force in Mali, had called on Traore to ensure the formation of a government that better represents Mali's different interests.

While the coup was condemned abroad, the reaction in cotton and gold producing Mali was mixed, with some praising the removal of a political class they said was corrupt.

Traore had reappointed his prime minister, Cheick Modibo Diarra, on August 12 and asked him to form a new government within 72 hours.

A Great Way To Give Your Business A Boost: Internet Marketing ...

An efficient Internet marketing strategy could be the key to a successful business venture. If you do not do this you may just fail as a business. This article offers techniques and tips on Internet marketing.

Offer your customers an additional discount incentive if they spend more than a set amount of money. A good thing to do is to offer customers a 10% discount on anything they spend over a certain amount. This can increase your sales.

Having a specified area on your site dedicated to reviews is a useful tool for Internet marketing. Customers who post their experience with your product can result in new sales, and they also increase your Internet presence with more content.

TIP! Set aside enough money to buy a domain name. You may not be able to find a domain name that matches your company?s name exactly.

When making your website, try to make it visibly appealing with as much interesting content as possible. You must be able to know how to present information within a short amount of time. This way your customer will be able to make a decision based on your information. Take care not to be repetitive in your descriptions, or give your customers information that is worthless or uninteresting.

Internet marketing is an ever-changing field, so you will continually need to research latest techniques and take the job seriously to succeed. Try to find someone successful in the field to emulate. Look for experts who offer their advice for free or a nominal fee. Choose a method that suits you, and use that method. Remember that in the beginning it will be slow, but it is worth it in the end.

Think about using words such as ?simple? and ?easy? to describe your online marketing plans. People generally dislike overly complicated things, so adding tags like ?easy to order? and ?easy to use? can entice them to use your product. This is an easy way to boost your business.

TIP! Make use of viral videos to bring lots of visitors to go to your site. If you want to get millions of people to visit your website, you must engage in out-of-the-box brainstorming to create your viral video.

Internet marketing has some characteristics common to most other markets, but also has big differences. For example, title tags may cease to be the focus of search engines. If this were to occur, you would need to direct your efforts more towards other options, like viral video marketing.

There is no step-by-step recipe for Internet marketing success; it is as much an art as it is a science. Before you begin Internet marketing, try to both aspects. Make sure you think it through when you are considering what your customer wants to experience.

TIP! You may want to offer incentives to your customers, to encourage them to order products faster. Incentives can include free or upgraded shipping, or even gift wrapping.

To trick people into clicking on ads, create a discreet image that links to a page describing the product you are selling. Use engaging colors, graphics or text that can be placed in your signature when you post online. They won?t appear like an ad that way.

Advertise limited-edition products. Shopping online has become popular due to the fact it gives people more variety options; it?s also just more convenient. They want something unique and different. By selling merchandise in limited editions, you will create a higher demand for the product based upon a sense of urgency.

Incorporate the marketing principles and strategies learned in this article in your own business. With hard work and determination, eventually you will get to the point where you will learn how to effectively communicate with your customers that will lead to a more successful business

TIP! Before considering search engine rankings or things of that nature, you must build a website that people will want to visit. All online businesses should begin with this idea.

Windows Phone Will Soon Overtake BlackBerry in the U.S.

Through all the problems and bad press Research In Motion has been getting lately, the company often likes to talk about how well its BlackBerry brand is doing overseas. It has to because, according to recent statistics, the picture in America is dismal.

This chart from StatCounter, posted by WMPoweruser, shows the market share of smartphones running BlackBerry OS vs. Windows Phones. It's actually quite surprising: Projecting the trend of both platforms forward a few months, Windows Phone will actually overtake BlackBerry this year, sometime in November 2012.

That would be an impressive milestone for Windows Phone considering it will be almost exactly two years after its U.S. launch in November 2010 that it leapfrogs one of the smartphone brands that helped define the category. At the time, BlackBerry was at the top of the mobile food chain with 34.3% of the market, StatCounter says, and Windows Mobile (the predecessor to Windows Phone) wasn't even a blip on the radar.

The crossover may even happen sooner when a new crop of Windows Phones arrives in September -- Nokia and Microsoft are expected to unveil the first Windows Phone 8 handsets at an event that month. RIM won't be launching its long-delayed BlackBerry 10 platform until early 2013.

RIM's picture around the rest of the world is a little better, but StatCounter still shows falling or nonexistent market share in Europe, Oceania and Asia. It's still inching up in Africa and South America.

Up close and personal: The view from Obama?s cameraman

Political Punch

Different presidents put their stamps on new technology in different ways: Roosevelt used radio with his fireside chats in a way that nobody had done before; John F. Kennedy's ability to connect with the American people through television was the first of its kind; and whatever you think of President Obama, he has, at least in the near term, changed the way presidents will use the internet, especially internet video. Obama brought to the White House its first ever official videographer, Arun Chaudhary. Chaudhary left the position last year, and out with a new book, First Cameraman, detailing his experience behind the lens.

Chaudhary was originally part of Obama's 2008 presidential campaign, shooting and editing videos for the campaign's website. Going from the campaign to the White House was a big change, said the cameraman.

"It went from being part of a messaging team to being, you know, an agent of history, and I did try to take that seriously," said Chaudhary. Part of that, he said was showing a more realistic view of the presidency. He highlighted aspects of the job that are not as glamorous as they seem, like the endless drudgery of travel.

By creating "West Wing Week," a weekly video review of what the president has done, Chaudhary and the Obama administration were also able to bypass traditional media and go directly to the president's supporters.

"It did allow us to communicate in a different way with the American people than we can with the press, and I think to do things that you guys covering the White House can't do," said Chaudhary.

What key moments did Chaudhary's camera capture? And which politicians does he think would benefit from a personal videographer? Check out this week's Political Punch to find out.
